    Frequent disconnects from university wifi

    Hi guys,

My university has wireless in the dorms, which is great but it randomly disconnects me from the network. I don't have such problems on any of my mobile devices, so I'm convinced there's a Windows tweak that could help with this problem. Does anybody have any ideas?

Perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling Wireless adapter will fix, have you tried that? Or upgrading it's drivers? Also, perhaps your wireless adapter is failing, or a setting is wrong? Do you have access to a USB based wireless adapter to test this theory?

This happens to all of my roommates, both to PCs and Macs. And yeah, I have a USB wireless adapter.

Sounds like an issue with your universities wifi in the dorm then...

    Greenfire,
I agree that you have a problem with the uni wifi in your dorm.

    You can check following:
Control Panel | Power Options |
to the right of the Power Plan with the selected radio button, you will see Change Plan Settings. Click on Change Plan Settings |
click on Change advanced power settings (near the bottom on the left) |
expand Wireless Adapter Settings | for your power mode, you have:
    On Battery: select Maximum Performance
    Plugged In:
    select Maximum Performance |
    Apply
    button | OK button

Right karlsnooks, did that, still have problems. I did some research about this and it seemed that messing around with wireless zero configuration in XP solved a similar problem for many people; I'm not sure if this applies to my situation.

It might be the way wifi is set up here, but my iPad and my roommate's Android tablet never disconnect like my computer does. I was hoping that there was a way to configure windows to prevent disconnecting.

Give this troubleshooting advice/procedure from Microsoft a chance:

    GreenFire:

Since all of you in the dorm have the same issue dont go changing your settings... instead contact your universities IT department... it IS THEIR ISSUE, NOT YOURS!
