can't make lan cable connection between xp and 7 work

I managed to get folder sharing between a 7 and xp computer via lan cable to
    work.
It took houers, and when it worked I didn't know why.

After reinstalling xp, again I can't make the lan cable connection between
the xp and 7 computer work.

The lan has the same name on both computers, and ip on both computer are config'ed.
Icons on both computers say, that the lan connection is running.
However, if I ping the windows 7 computer from the xp computer, it
works. If I ping the xp computer from the xp computer, it works.
If I ping the xp computer from the 7 computer, it doesn't work. If I ping
the 7 computer from the 7 computer, it doesn't work.

And on the 7 computer there is an yellow triangle on the network icon.
But it was also there before reinstallation, and the lan connection worked
    anyway.

How do I get the lan cable connection to work?
    Thanks.

Did you try the diagnose connection option in Win7's Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network Connections app?? Right click on it...

    You also said early on...

Can you desribe what you mean by LAN cable connection... is this a PC to PC (ad hoc) network, or do you have a switch or router?

Connection is pc to pc via crossover lan cable.

    I found the error.
I turned off the firewalls, and was able to access public folder
on 7 computer from xp computer.
And was able to access shared folders on xp computer from 7 computer.
To get files from 7 computer to xp computer I had to make folders on xp computer
    read and writable.
I'm not able to overview how to share folders on windows7.
    Or config'ing firewalls.
If you know a good tutorial please answer.

    About the firewalls.
Apparently I managed on the previous xp installation to run the lan network
without turning the firewalls off. I had config'ed the firewalls to accept
the lan connection without knowing it, or how.

    I've come some steps further.
I had forgotten to give both computers the same workgroupname.
After that, both computers got the other computers networkplace.

I managed, to share folders on xp and access from 7 computer.
I managed, to share folders on the 7 computer, in such a way that
they appear on the xp computer.
But if I click on the folder, it prompts 'access denied'.
