Wireless network adapter problems

I have an Acer Aspire 5553 with an Atheros ar5b97 wireless adapter. I recently moved to France from England and until the move I was able to connect. I don't know if it's a coincidence but when I got to my new flat I was not able to connect to the wireless home network. Other computers can and I can connect with an ethernet cable. After two days of trying all the options and solutions the troubleshooter gave to no avail it suddenly connected. That lasted two days and now it won't work again. The troubleshooter says there's a problem with the default gateway or the network adapter. The network icon tells me I'm connected but have no access, then it says 'Identifying Network' then it disconnects, then it identifies it, connects for a second and then disconnects again. I have reset the network adapter, uninstalled it and installed but nothing works.
Do I need to buy a new adapter?
Help!
Thank you
