    Time Server and HomeGroup setup

As a christmas present I picked up a new laptop for my girlfriend and would like to have it all setup before I give it to her.

I have now spent a day and a half trying to get my homegroup network setup and running properly. I just finally was able to get the "join homegroup" option on the laptop (before I was only getting the "create" one both LAN desktop and WiFi laptop).

But now, when I enter the password and hit join I get an error message saying the laptop cannot connect to the homegroup, and the "trouble shooter" is running me in circles.

I've read that both computer must be running on the same time server and have the clocks syncronized with one another. The laptop connects to time.windows.com without any issues. No matter what I try on the desktop I get nothing but error messages. I've tried all default time servers, and many I have found online without any success.

Obviously I'm missing something, can you guys help me find what it is?

I would take a look at your router/access point/whatever it is that supplies your wireless. I'd be willing to bet it has some 'firewall' style functionality, and separates your wireless and hard lines into two separate networks.

Well, it seems I have figured it out.

Im not sure what I did differently this time than the others. While the desktop still wont syn with the time servers, the two computer are now sharing files over the homegroup network.

I reversed the roles, I was creating the Homegroup on the desktop then trying to join via the laptop. This time, I created it on the laptop, and was able to successfully join on the desktop.
