Windows 7 to Windows XP sharing not working

XP / W7 sharing often seems a bit "Hit and miss".

1) can the W7 computer SEE the XP machine in its network view. If it can't then ensure Network Discovery is enabled.
2) ensure both machines are members of the same workgroup and have the same user id and passwords.
3) turn off XP firewall AND ANY AV SOFTWARE while testing. Maybe also the W7 firewall and AV SOFTWARE as well.
4) enable XP file sharing on all the disks you want to share
5) if they are already "shared" the unshare them, run the network setup wizard in the XP control panel and then "re-share" the drives.
6) re-boot the xp machine.

Sometimes the "Master Browser" gets hosed up -- this is the machine that seems to identify all the componets in the network.


Finally you might be able to connect if you actually know the IP address or the computer name of the machine on your network then connect network drive \\spotteddog\D where spotteddog is the computer name of the machine you want to connect to and D is the drive you want to use.

Windows networking although better in W7 is still a pain compared with Linux.

In theory the machines shouldn't need the same passwords / user id combinations or even need to be members of the same workgroup but when testing networking make everything as SIMPLE and easy as possible-- switch off all FIREWALLS and AV SOFTWARE -- these can often prevent networking when everything else seems correct.

I have a windows XP with shares which windows 7 can read. I created the same account on each PC with the same password. jimbo45 has some good pointers to try.

Thanks for the replies but they haven't helped. I tried all of your suggestions jimbo45 but they didn't solve the problem. Please look at this video, it will probably help to sort out the problem :)

Oh and by the way, the login doesn't work with or without a password. And desperado126, this doesn't work on XP Home (which is what I have)

Also have a read of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840634 about firewall rules and opening port tcp 445. If you don't use windows firewall. Try disabling your other firewall software temporarily to see if that works.

Do you have password on xp machine?
Use Xp Username and password!
On Seven go to start=>run=>services.msc and turn on these services and switch them to automatically start-up: DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service!

have you got xp setup so you logon without a password, sometimes that can cause an error, you have to disable the password restriction in security/services, also a few of those 'lite' xp installs have lots of broken issues with networking.

go to services, set the "TCP/IP Netbios helper" service to automatic, and start the service.

Now you'll see you xp computer.

just a quick thought what is the service pack level of the XP install, I discovered a similar problem when trying to connect a XP SP3 or Vista SP1 to a XP SP1 or lower install.

I believe it is a problem with the type of authentication used. I'm no Microsoft tech but I think XP is expecting a plain text password but vista and seven will only send encrypted passwords by default. I might be wrong.

Make sure the XP install has SP3.
