Windows 7: Slow speed, fast speed, slow speed.

Slow speed, fast speed, slow speed.

Recently moved house and had installed my internet today, the exact same setup.

Right now the only difference with this setup is that the router is plugged into my laptop, and if anything, it's closer to my computer than it was in the previous house.

My problem is that it randomly goes slow for short periods of time, or in games it lags like crazy. For example while watching youtube it'll shoot up the loading bar fast and then all of a sudden stop, and go really slowly, then back into fast speed over and over.

What can I do to resolve this?

Go to speedtest.net and see what your download and upload speeds are. Watching a youtube video will use less bandwidth than a game would.

You could also do a tracert to google.com to see if there are any high response times.

I did the speedtest when I wasn't doing any video downloading or gaming and it was at 2mbps download and .05 upload which is what my speed should be. As soon as I started to load a video and game it went to .4 download and .2 upload which is just unacceptable. I should be able to watch 20 videos at the same time with ease, but now if I did something like that it would take about an hour..

Did you do a tracert to google? (Start>Run>type 'cmd'. When the black box opens type in 'tracert google.com') Copy your results back here.

Speak to your serice provider and ask them to test the line.

It only has really high pings (up to 1,000) when it's loading youtube or downloading. But that's only sometimes, it doesn't always do it when downloading.

The above looks ok. Do another one whilst watching a video so we can see where the problem is. It could be a graphics problem with your PC. Do you have the latest drivers? Are there any other PC's on the network having this problem?

And not as I am aware. I usually play WoW and watch videos all day while on TS3 and other various programs, no one else on the network does that, but they are also not having any slow youtube loads like I am.

E: Yes I updated all my drivers this morning.

Is your IP Address 10.0.0.138? Are you connected by a wire or wireless?

As you can see from the tracert the response times increase massively.

Update your Network card drivers and replace your ADSL Filter. I would report it to your service provider and ask them to do tests at your end whilst on WoW so they can see the spike in reponse times.

Also, if you have access to your router, do a tracert from there to google as well, just to see if the response times are the same.

It's 10.0.0.18. Connected wirelessly. Network drivers (on this computer) are all updated. I will replace the filter soon and I'll have to call tomorrow as they're closed at the moment. And how do I do that from the router?
