    what is default gateway? 192.168.1.1

my family uses an Internet Broadband that says ADSL2+ Modem Router. Then on the back of the Broadband, there is a printed/ sticked "Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1".
what is this? 192.168.1.1? can i connect to it with my laptop?

The router will route traffic from the internal network to the Internet. So, yes you can connect via Wireless and hit the network. The default gateway is the IP address assigned to the router that you specify on each client computer. Therefore, if the destination is the Internet and now the local network...your client will use the default gateway to continue onto the Internet.

if you type the default gateway into a browser window, this will allow you to log onto the router and change the options like the wireless key and SSID, remove and add firewall exceptions and so forth
