Windows 7: Microsoft Backup to an attached NAS Drive on my Network - How to?

I wanted to back up my data files using the supplied backup utility in Win 7 64bit. I run the program and under Backup Destination all I see is my DVD Drive and no way to change to another destination. So under Devices with Removable Storage(1) I see the drive. In my Network locations I created a Share called Backup which I created.

So what do I need to setup where Set up backup will let me select my network share "backup"?

The NAS (usually has ethernet integrated) should be plugged in to the router or switch, then any computers in your network can access the NAS thru it's IP Address but not unless it only supports USB. If that's the case you may create a mapped network drive.

You are correct. My NAS is connected to my router via ethernet. I do have a Drive Mapped and can see the "shares". However, the backup utility only sees the DVD drive and does not show any of my Shares I created/mapped to a network drive as a destination for creating a backup.

If you have the Home edition it will not support it. You need to have Windows 7 Ultimate or above.

A good option for you to do is use your NAS Backup Software.

Rats! I have Windows 7 Home Premium. I guess I will have to look for an anternative. I just thought it would be easy to use the Microsoft software that comes with the OS. Is there another option with my OS and backup to "trick" the computer to back to a network share?

Well, I just one of the many free backup programs from download.com called EaseUS Backup. So, I am all set for now.
