I have to Remove the printer and Add it again using exactly the same settings as before. A print out of the HP Configuration page shows that the IP address is remaining static at what I set it to.

So any ideas on why it just stops responding to a print command? All household computers which have printed successfully to the HP using the IP port are running Windows 7.
It looks like your printer is going into sleep mode or standby, Have you looked at the configuration via http and see if there is some option to go into sleep or standby?

I could be the jet direct card that is turning itself off and then when you re-install the printer. it wakes up.

Looke at the configuration via your browser and see what options are selected.

Interestingly I cannot access the printer via the browser. When I type in the IP, all it does is say "Unable to connect". On the test page printout from the HP's front panel, it says, among other things,

PWRSAVE = 30 Min
IO TIMEOUT = 15

I ran the HP Home Network Utility (HPHNDU.exe) and it cannot find my networked printer (even when the printer is working) Though when I check the Detect Network Devices option, it shows the IP for the printer but lists it as an "Unknown" device. I am asking the HP forum for help on this also. Re: HP LJ 4 M Plus w/JetDirect standby interferring with pri... - HP Support Forum I will post a solution if/when I get it.

Thanks!

I think I have found the solution- set up the printer as a local printer instead of a network printer. Create a new TCP/IP port when requested and use the IP address set in the printer that you find or have set, when you print out a test page following directions in my previous posting.

I tried both with the Powersave on and off and it worked both ways. I would prefer to keep the powersave feature on. I've put my computer into sleep and turned off the printer and it still sees the printer when I bring everything back up.

I'm not sure why adding the printer as a local printer with the TCP/IP port works versus setting it up as a network printer with the same TCP/IP port, but I'm not going to argue.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

See, if you keep at it, you learned a lot. I do that most of the time for printers where I don't have a disk for the printer but can set it up with an IP. Sometimes I end up using a generic hp driver like for a laser jet II or something like that.

I believe that I had suggested setting the printer up as if it was a local printer and picking a tcp/ip port for it.

Keep the faith

Indeed you did! I lost that suggestion in the fog of getting all the other settings. But I have to say that your various suggestions kept leading me down the right path. So thank you.
