    FTP sites automatically open in browser instead of Windows Explorer

    I've always used explorer.exe as an FTP client but yesterday it stopped working. Every time I open an FTP site with explorer it opens up in default web browser (Firefox 8).

    I also tried making a new url shortcut to "ftp://xxx.xxx/" with the .url extension. That also opened in Firefox. I then changed the default program of .url files to explorer.exe and that resulted in an infinite loop of new explorer.exes opening. The default recommended opening program is "Internet Browser - Microsoft Corporation".

    So what on earth happened? Before that I had installed a new processor (Athlon X4 -> Phenom X6) and installed some light weight benchmarking software like CoreTemp and CPUID HWmonitor.

    Does anyone know how this can be fixed? Maybe in somewhere in the registry?

    Thank you!

    Hello,

    See:
    How do you set a default for ftp sites to always open using Windows - Microsoft Answers

    It will be something to dowith the new firefox installation. Changing the file extensions wont help because FTP is a protocol not an extension.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Unfortunately that method didn't work. I found the right keys in register and indeed FTP was linked to firefox.exe. But after changing them to explorer.exe and rebooting the problem was still there.

    Within computer right click onto the clear space below your drives and click 'Add a network location'. Cerate the FTP location in here and then create a shortcut on your desktop.

    Alternatively download an ftp client like filezilla and do your FTP transfers through that.

    Problem solved.

    I just copied the FTP register keys from my laptop and installed it on my main PC. It had some additional keys in the main branch that I didn't have on this computer.

    Register key included in case someone else needs it.

    Paste the following into a blank text document and save as ftp_key.reg or download file below. Then run the file.
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ftp]
    @="URL:File Transfer Protocol"
    "AppUserModelID"="Microsoft.InternetExplorer.Default"
    "EditFlags"=dword:00000002
    "FriendlyTypeName"="@C:\\Windows\\System32\\ieframe.dll,-905"
    "ShellFolder"="{63da6ec0-2e98-11cf-8d82-444553540000}"
    "Source Filter"="{E436EBB6-524F-11CE-9F53-0020AF0BA770}"
    "URL Protocol"=""

It still says "chrome.exe" in the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/FTP/open/" branch but the lines that are really needed are located in the main branch.
