Windows 7: Connecton Closed by Remote Server

On my Dell Studio XPS (Windows 7) I have been getting this message for several days since I updated Avast and Google Chrome. This message occurs on all three ISPs, IE9, Firefox and Opera. At least with Opera my Speed Dial page opens but only three of the 12 items will open and, in each case, I can carry out some limited further searches on the relevant websites. I have searched in the Opera Forums for advice where there are many items relevant to this problem in Opera but no reference the same problem in other browsers. I have tried System Restore to earlier dates without any success and two out of three restore attempts failed.



I have also downloaded to my wife's Windows 7 computer (Acer Aspire) the Fixit program discussed in Computer Active Dec 2011 and copied the relevant solutions to a USB memory stick. I then tried to run the program on the Dell computer but without success, since the program requires a working internet connection. The LAN works without any problems.

I have also tried the advice offered in an earlier Computer Active Internet Forum paper and Windows 7 Troubleshooter also without success.

Please can anyone offer some further advice?
