    Hostname problem Windows 7

    Win7 cannot access XP, NAS, or network printer by hostname. Win7 CAN access by IP address. Win7 hostname used to work, then months ago suddenly stopped working. XP can see Win7, NAS, and printer, so the problem is limited to Win7 hostname resolution. Changed router; problem still there. Win7 CAN access wireless Epson printer. Win7 problem with wifi and hardwire.

    Tried disabling firewall/antivirus, flushDNS.bat, changing workgroup name. NetBios is on, windows network client is on, homegroups off, password sharing off, discovery on, file/printer sharing on.

    If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

    First check and disable any firewalls... note that most new AV products contain a firewall. Please report back...

    Thanks for the reply.

    I have tried disabling all firewalls and AV. No joy.

    public DNS servers set to this machine only, or on the others' as well?
    If you're using public DNS servers, I would give the devices static IPs through the router and use IPs for the connection.

    1-Can't restore to earlier date--it was months ago, but thanks.

    2-My DNS servers were set automatically. What options do I have, and could this help my problem?

    I could easily give my devices static IPs and access that way, but I'd prefer to use host names.

    Printer UPDATE: A few days ago, I tried to put an IP address for my printer port instead of the host name, but Win7 rejected it for some reason. Just now I tried again--the IP address was accepted this time and I can print! I'd still like to get host names working tho. Easier to use in Windows Explorer, and when I copy files I get a security warning when I use IP addresses.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

    As you indicate, your problem is one of name resolution. This may be caused by your "Node Type" being set to "Peer-Peer" as shown in your ipconfig output. Do you have a WINS server configured? Try looking at the node type angle.

    I don't have a WINS server configured. How would I do that? Should I change the Node Type? Thanks for your help.

    The node type Peer-Peer requires a WINS, or similar, name server for name resolution - you don't want to mess with that.

    Take a look at the following to see what your registry values are for NodeType and DhcpNodeType: You cannot view other workgroup computers on the network on a Windows XP-based computer
    The link says to delete these entries if they are present, then reboot. I would just take a look and post back what you find.

    This is for an XP but my Win7 follows the same structure. I don't have a NodeType entry, but my DhcpNodeType is (8).

    1 = B-Node (broadcast)
    2 = P-Node (point-to-point)
    4 = M-Node (mixed)
    8 = H-Node (hybrid)
