    Download speed slow, only on wireless

    On my friend's Toshiba laptop, when we connect to the router using a LAN cable, the download speed is around 15 Mb/s. When we connect wirelessly, the download speed is about 1 Mb/s, although sometimes it goes as high as 4 Mb/s. I've already tried uninstalling/reinstalling the wireless driver. Any ideas what else to look at?

    Thanks

    Hello,

    I would find out what type of AV/Security or Firewall Software your friend is using. Try disabling it, see if it helps.

    Updating the driver might also help.

    Also, see if you're able to replicate the issue if you're on Safe Mode with Networking.

    * Visit Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
    * Click Begin Test

    Report was is your friend's Ping in millisecond, Download Speed, Upload Speed and then compare that with the LAN cable to find out exactly what the difference is. But there are a few things you can do with your friend's wireless:

    * Download and Install the Driver from Manufacturer's website
    * Use a different channel on your router
    * There are tools that allow you to scan the channel number for other local wireless network connections. You can use that information to select the channel for YOUR home wireless so that it isn't the same as other people around your neighborhood.
    * Use AES Encryption only, some routers have issue with AES+TKIP encryption algorithms. AES is sufficient.

    OK thanks for the suggestions.

    I've already done the driver. And Speedtest.net is what I was using to determine the speed problem.

    I will try all the suggested ideas.

    I didn't know that about trying different encryption, that's an interesting thought.

    He is out of town now for 10 days, will do these when he gets back.

    Thanks
