Wireless connectivity problems - settings do not match etc.
Hi guys,
I've had a long search for a solution to this problem, which itself seems widespread enough, however the most common solution has no effect for me. Problem is as follows:
We have a network set up with many wireless devices connected, we recently switched ISP and got a BT HomeHub 3. All of our mobile devices connect without a problem, as does one of our home PCs which is running windows XP. The problem is our other 2 PCs which run Vista and Windows 7 and their flakey connectivity. The router is set up with WPA2 encryption and I've turned off WPS in case this might have been causing problems (even though I was occasionally able to connect using it).
The troublesome PCs will connect to the router when I reset it (usually by unplugging it from the power supply) but the Vista PC will eventually lose the connection and will be unable to reconnect. The Windows 7 PC can also develop this problem (so far only seems to occur when I hover over the wireless connection in the network box), getting an error stating "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network". The icon in the task bar will then get a red cross on it and when trying to reconnect it will incorrectly state the network is secured with WEP (it is actually WPA2) and will not prompt for a passphrase, instead just popping up a less than helpful troubleshooting dialogue.
The most common solution I've found says to open the network connections and remove the saved network settings and then try again. I tried this on both PCs before I even googled the problem and many times after and not once has it worked (I live in hope though), but there are practically no other proposed solutions other than disabling wireless security and having an open network which I don't think is appropriate considering the nature of our internet traffic. I have tried driver updates, firmware updates, disabling and enabling adapters, manually setting up the network, refining the router settings and hours of pulling hair over various settings. At least the most troublesome (Vista) PC is for recreation only but I still desperately need to sort this out.
I hope the wall of text is not too incoherent. If anyone can offer some suggestions which I have not yet thought of I will be most grateful. If you can solve my problem, even better! Thanks in advance.
Regards,
James.
