Show Windows 7 machine to Windows XP network

I have a home network that I originally set up using two XP machines and a network drive via a Netgear router. Then I exchanged one XP machine for a W7 X64 machine.

Since then:
  1. the W7 machine can see the whole network and share the XP's files,
  2. the XP can see the network drive and the Netgear router
  3. the XP cannot see the W7 machine, not even specific folders that have been shared.
I have done everything possible (see TIMSTITT on the converse problem, April 2009) to make the W7 machine accessible to the other machine, but without any joy.

Are you by chance using homegroup for networking?

1. Make sure that File and Print Sharing is enabled and is excluded from the Firewall on both PCs.
2. Make sure HomeGRoup network is disabled on the Windows 7 machine and is connected to the same workgroup name as the XP machine (default is MSHOME for XP, WORKGROUP is the alternative).
3. MAke sure Network Discovery is enabled on Windows 7 PC (See Advanced Sharing Options in Network center).

According to the Control Panel network program
  1. there is no homegroup on the network, but one is "ready to create".
  2. it cannot find any networks to map.
But W7 Windows Explorer show both PCs on the Network, in a workgroup named by me as "WORKGROUP".

LATE EXTRA
Whatever I did to W7 seems to have worked after I rebooted the XP machine. I still have no apparent name for the network but all 3 networked devices are now accessible from both PCs.

Thanks for your attemps to help, even if I did not have to apply them.
