Have a look here: Why can't I join a homegroup?

    And here: Join a homegroup

The important thing to remember is that the Windows 7 Starter and Basic editions will only let you join a homegroup, not create one.

Have you created a homegroup on another Windows 7 computer in your network?

I have looked at all those before I joined and still no go. I even applied the 'fix it" from Microsoft to "join a homegroup".
I created a homegroup on my desktop which is an Asus windows 7 home premium. The netbook is a starter edition though. I know about not creating one on that, i can only join one, but the join button is grayed out and I still cannot get it to go, hence all the trouble shooting and tutorials I have read. I dont know what to do.

You may want to consider giving up on a homegroup and create a workgroup instead.

I've only made the suggestion because it helped others with the same problem.
