Wireless Network Problems

So here's the scoop.

Last night everything worked fine, my desktop was hooked up to my tv and sitting next to it on the floor (has a rosewill Rosewill RNX-N180PCe adapter) Anyways, didn't have any problems with connection or speed, everything seemed fine.

Today i get my monitor in, so i hook it up to my desktop and both it and my desktop are on top of my desk. The card is in the back, with room to breath, a wall from the side and the wall at the back are close to it though.

SIGNAL IS AWFUL. I would get 1.5Mbps download when it was on the floor yesterday, today i am lucky to get .3Mbps download... Don't really understand why the connection is so piss poor, it is maybe like 6 more feet from my router at most.

The router is in my roommates room about 20 feet away. It is an Airport Extreme and is my router, it has always worked fine until this.

I have done everything imaginable, restarted the computer, tried new DNS servers, flushed DNS, turned the computer around so the card is not facing the wall and still my connection is horrible. (I have also reset the router/modem)

However, my roommate uses his laptop 5 feet from the router wirelessly and it works perfectly for him.

Any suggestions on what i should do?

What if your roommate puts his notebook in the same location as your desktop? I'm wondering if that location is receiving interference. Also you can use your smartphone (if you have one) to check signal strength with some apps.

I do have an iphone 4s and hp touchpad virtually in the same location as my desktop. (give or take a foot)

I do not think it is the adapter cause it worked fine last night, and even if i look at the adapter settings it says:
Speed: Tx:58Mbps Rx:130Mbps Signal strength is fluctuating from 70% to 85%

Edit: Sidenote, Go wildcats! I go to UK as well.

Just ordered a new adapter that is usb with a cord/ antenna, if that doesn't work i'm going to move the router out of my roommates room.

Very nice. Good luck on your future endeavors! And yeah I've been a huge fan my whole life, I went to the elite 8 and final four the past two years and needless to say I wont go back, seems as if I am a curse haha.

Back on topic: my iphone gets 10Mbps down whereas in the same location my desktop gets barely 1Mbps down. So is it safe to assume I need a new wireless adapter for my desktop?
(If so, any reccomendations?)

Thanks,

Eric

If the problem is on the receiving end, and it's the adapter, I would recommend:

D-Link DWA-556 PCIe Wireless Network Adapter - 300Mbps, 802.11n (Draft N), PCI-Express $54
Buy.com

If the problem were on the sending end, you could:

1. You can change the position of the current wi-fi router.
2. You can get a wi-fi range extender, to boost your current router.
3. You can purchase a new wi-fi router, such as Linksys, which is owned by Cisco.

I don't think it's on the sending, has to be receiving end.

I got another adapter that has a usb cord of about 3ft and is an antenna, so maybe that will be better, if it is not I will try the adapter you suggested!

Thanks a lot.
