When I do this now, with the newly added authenticated user, there are no greyed out arrows. But still the locked icon remains. It is when I click on the administrator user and the computer name option that the arrows are greyed out...which is weird...shouldn't the administrator have full access?

Let's try a different tactic.
From another computer in your network Click on Start Orb and type \\ComputerName\C$. See if you can access the files, open them up, are you able to Edit or just a 'Read only' permission.
Also, repeat the process again this time type: \\ComputerName\SharedExtHDD press enter. The Computer Name can also be replaced by an IP Address.

Hello,

I tried doing that on my desktop (the new computer that as of now has no files in it from the laptop), and a window opened up asking me for my network username and password. I'm not sure what network username it is referring to, but I used the username on my laptop that I have all my files under, and that password. It says it is either an unknown username or bad password.

Did I set up a different network username at some point that I'm just not remembering? Is that different from the user that I always log into my laptop with?

Even stranger, because it asked me to type in the username for the computer I was trying to access (the name of the computer is the same as the username I always use when using as administrator, which I always use), when the password did not work, another window popped up to give me a second chance to enter in the correct password, and now the username it has me trying to log into says DESKTOP\"computername". With "computername" being the name of my laptop. This makes me think that it was NOT asking me for my laptop name or username that I use on my laptop, but some other network username which I am unaware of.

I will need some more info for you and more tasks if you don't mind.

Match and verify your current setup from this link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...g-the-easy-way

If you have a Security or Firewall Software, pls. disable it for now. If you are using Windows built-in Firewall, make sure to exclude File and Printer sharing.

In addition to the link please create the same UserName and Password on both computers.

Then try this method again: Click on the Windows Orb, type \\ComputerName\SharedFolderName press enter, also the Computer Name can be replaced by an IP Address.

Provide the ipconfig /all output of the computers in question.
Click on the Windows orb type cmd, right click on cmd see at the top, and click on Run as Administrator. From the command prompt (black screen), Copy and Paste these ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt . You will find the output in your Local Disk 'C'.
