Ok, log into the router - the username is probably admin and the pass should be password.

If you can log into it, click the link on the left menu named LAN Setup. Is the box checked that says use router as a DHCP Server?

    • Ok,in the router setup page click the link on the left menu named LAN Setup.
    • On the LAN Setup page, enter 192.168.0.10 for the IP address
    • Uncheck the box that says Use Router as a DHCP Server
    • Click Apply and the router will save your changes.
    • Look at the Netgear and make a note of which port the modem wire is currently plugged into - it's either the WAN or a LAN port(in case you have to change it back).
    • Now make sure the network cable from the modem is going into one of the 4 LAN ports on the Netgear Router. NOT the yellow WAN port.
    • Give your computer a minute to reacquire a network address. If no dice, unplug the power cord on the Netgear for 10 seconds and try again.

In Windows 7 you can go to Network and sharing and click the red X anywhere in the map to start the troubleshooter if you run into a problem.

In a worst case scenario if you can't get anything online. Plug your computer directly into the modem. Or do a hard reset on the Netgear by pushing in the Reset pin for about 15 seconds until the lights start flashing. Then connect the network cable from the modem to the router the way it was originally (either to the LAN or WAN port).

I'm trying to give you a couple of outs in case you lose a connection and get get back online, since I don't know how your modem is configured at the moment.

I am a little confused. On the router there are 4 ports all in a row then 1 kinda by its self that the wire from the modem was plugged to. I moved that wire from the modem and plugged it to one of those 4. All 3 computers are still working. I assume I don't need to go any farther with instructions on this post.

That 1 port by itself is called a WAN port. The way your set up now (if it's working), your modem and any computers should be plugged into the 4 ports that are together (LAN ports).

Does the XP computer connect to the internet using a network cable now?

Only thing you have left to do is set up your wireless network. You go to the Wireless setup page in the Netgear Router and create a name for your Network (called an SSID) and a password.

See if you can log back into the Netgear and complete the instructions. Reread or print them out.

When I tried into the router 192.168.0.1 it opened the modem setup page. So I went and changed the wires on the router back. Then 192.168.0.1 got router page. I made the change on Ip to 192.168.0.10 (that is on the LAN TCP/IP part of the page) and unchecked use as a DHCP server. Got a popup that said DHCP server start and end range can not include router LAN ip address. Now back as it was

When you go into that LAN setup page, it shouldn't give the error message about starting and ending IP addresses if you have the box for Use as DHCP Server unchecked, then click Apply. If I'm wrong, just set the starting DHCP range at 192.168.0.100 and the end at 192.168.0.150. Apply, then plug the modem into a LAN port on the Netgear.

Once you get back on, I'll explain what happened.

I went back, tried again and made sure use router as DHCP server was unchecked and still got the popup. I changed starting and ending tp 192.168.0.100 and applied and the little circle kept going and timed out. Tried again and the little circle went for a long time but finally popup said changes successful. Went back to router and put modem cable in LAN port on router. XP computer can connect wired and wirless. This 7 is connected wired and the vista is connected wireless. Haven't tried the 7 wireless or the vista wired, no need to. On the XP with the usb wireless adapter plugged in it over rides the wired connection. have to disable wirelwss connection in order to connect wired. It looks like that is working as should
