One solution for LAN Cable Unplugged problem - To FIOS Router

Hi. Been looking for a solution to Win 7 not recognizing that a LAN-connected FIOS router was actually connected. Instead got the vague and looks like way too general message about LAN cable being unplugged.

I was able to ethernet connect the FIOS router to my former wireless router then ethernet connect from my former router to my laptop and all links were recognized (did not get that cable unplugged message) with all lights coming on. This was perplexing. (The direct cabling from the FIOS router also worked fine going to a Linux (Ubuntu) system I have.)

Finally went into FIOS router interface and found under the Advanced options one for Port Configuration and used that to set the speed to 100Mb Full duplex. Surprise! Now the laptop and Win 7 do recognize the direct cabling from the new router to the laptop. No more unplugged message.

Why the 'auto' port speed setting works when direct cabling to my old wireless router and not for a direct cable to the laptop is a mystery but I am happy that it is at least working and I could fix it if it recurs. BTW, found that the 'speedtest' from my older wireless router has much better results than that of the FIOS router so I also turned off wireless on the FIOS router and will run this way till FIOS's routers can equal the performance of my old one.

Hope this helps someone else who has banged their head against a desk for a few hours trying to figure out why the vague 'Network cable is unplugged' message comes out.

** Rant part **

Really it would be nice if Microsoft could break this message down to a much more meaningful and specific description of the problem. Somewhere in their code a check is done, a condition is not met and this general message is issued. At that point in the code, it would sure help if they would tell you what the failing condition is instead of giving an all purpose and therefore useless message!

Thank you

Toni Marie
