Windows 7 - How to make gaming have a higher preference than torrents (Bandwidth)

Hey, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this, if it isn't I would appreciate if someone would redirect me

I game online almost all the time, and when someone downloads a torrent, they suck all the bandwidth and it's almost impossible to game, I wanted to know if there is some way where i can make the games (or even my PC) for that matter acquire a precedence over all other devices

PS: I am using a belkin N150

If you have control over the computer running the torrent client, then the easiest, cheapest, option is to configure the torrent client to cap its transfer speeds at 70% of your connection speed. Most clients have this feature built in. Just specify that the client not upload at a rate faster than 70% of your upload speed or download at faster than 70% of your download speed. Unless you have a very slow connection, a 30% reservation should give you enough bandwidth for gaming unless somebody else starts browsing the web or downloading.

If you don't have control over the torrent client then you'll need to buy a new router that has QoS (quality of service) support with per-PC traffic shaping or traffic classification. This is definitely an advanced networking topic.

Hey Solid thanks a lot for your reply, I don't exactly have control over his laptop, I did once limit his downloads to 64kbps(mine is a 1mbps connection) but BitComet still kept sucking all the bandwidth, I also kicked his MAC a few times, but that wasn't exactly a solution lol, I did also try to mess with his web pages using Squid Proxy but that was Linux *SIGH* so I didn't get very far

So as I suspected QoS is needed, I upgraded from my OLD DI-524 to this Belkin, and surprisingly it still doesn't have QoS looks like that's the only solution now, so I shall close this thread soon, thanks again

Try Azureus (Vuze) instead. The speed caps. work very well in this program. Also comes with a Simple UI, if you're not a fan of the default one.

Do your research very carefully when choosing a new router. Not all QoS engines are created equal and BitTorrent traffic is difficult or impossible to positively identify. You'll need either a router that can impose bandwidth caps or reservations by destination IP address (or, preferably, MAC) or one that's smart enough to identify all known traffic--including your gaming connections--and deprioritize or cap everything that cannot be identified. I'm not aware of any consumer-level hardware that can meet either of these requirements.

Your best bet is OpenWRT but you'll need to learn Linux's tc to configure OpenWRT the way you want.
