Best DNS for my ISP and Location.

I currently have Verizon FIOS internet. One of the more quicker packages they offer 35down and 35 up.

Which DNS servers should I use if I want to be more secure as well as keep my speed? I am willing to pay for a subscription. I hear that Verizons DNS servers suck. But I also hear that you usually wanna keep your ISPs DNS settings, too.

Are there DNS servers I can use for my state? City?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

Use googles DNS Servers. They are very reliable (as you can imagine).

    Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
    Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

If they dont work out for you, you can always change them later on.

try running google's namebench utility to find the quickest dns servers for your area. it frequently is not their own...

Thanks guys. when I get off work I will try out both.

Anybody in the same area as me with FIOS and has already configured your DNS for security and speed your input is greatly appreciated as well!

I use OpenDNS - Cloud Internet Security and DNS. Its free and has built in protection. As an option you can sign up for a free account for additional features but its not necessary.

Once my Verizon internet gets hooked up, i will test OpenDNS as well as use the tool recommended by Kronckew.

I tried that program out for my current ISP, and it said my current settings are the best so I changed to OpenDNS and the Ping increased a little over 200. I guess you either get security, or you get speed. Hard to get the best of both worlds.

Oh well though. I will look in to what the best settings are when my verizon is actually hooked up this coming up weekend. Once i find out what works for me and my location, i will mark this as solved.

    Thanks for your help guys.

I know it's been a very long time since this thread was started but i decided to add a little something for others.

More good DNS Benchmark utilities are DNS Benchmark, Google Namebench

    Thanks guys.
