Mind boggling network problem -"Doesn't have a valid IP configuration"
Hi everyone I've run into a problem that I really don't understand and I was hoping somebody here could help me.
First a little background so you can understand the situation. My set up is that I live in a two story house and have my cable modem and a D-Link ethernet switch in my den on the ground floor. I connect to the internet via this switch, and the switch also leads upstairs to the bedrooms, where we have a D-Link wireless router. This wireless router then provides internet to all of the bedrooms (with their laptops and Ipads) upstairs, my Xbox and another computer. My computer downstairs has no wireless card so I have to access the net via a wired connection with this one.
Now everything was fine and all my devices, whether wired or wireless had access to the internet until one day, my computer in the den could NOT access the internet. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen on forums and nothing would work. I even tried moving my den computer upstairs and plugged it into the router, and it would work! I tried moving multiple laptops downstairs as well to see if it was just the computer and they also were not be able to access the internet via wired connection through the switch.
What WOULD work sometimes is if I restarted and reset the cable modem, then sometimes my downstairs internet would work. However, if the downstairs computer's internet would work, then the devices who rely on the wireless router to connect to the internet would then be unable to do so. So basically I can only have one or the other and I don't understand how and why.
The most common error message I get when trying to repair these (right clicking on the "Unidentified Network - no network access" and clicking troubleshoot problems) is that "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration." My ISP doesn't want to help because they say it could be my router. I've tried replacing my router. I've tried using the router downstairs. Basically no matter what I do, I can't get internet access to my entire house, only either JUST upstairs or JUST my den. I've spent hours trying to fix this, restarting my modem over and over hoping that both upstairs and downstairs internet would work, I'm really frustrated and hopefully somebody can help me out.
