Can I control windows media player remotely?

I have a htpc (nettop running windows 7 ultimate). I have a laptop running windows 7 home prem.

Remote desktop is set up perfectly and I use it primarily to control newsgroup downloads from my laptop on my htpc.

I am looking to find a way to control windows media player on the htpc via a remote. I know direct control via a media center remote/keyboard/etc works - I do that currently using the TV as the monitor. However, if I look at a kindle fire or android device is there some kind of app that can remotely control playback of windows media player on the original HTPC?

I am not looking to play wmp via remote desktop, but rather control the wmp that is running on the htpc. It seems remote desktop just creates another instance of the player for use on the device that is accessing the htpc.
