RDP via SSH Tunnel Windows 7 to Windows XP not working

I am having a problem with Remote Desktop that I have not for the life of me been able to figure out. It involves going from a Windows 7 box to an XP Pro box via an SSH tunnel and I have yet to find a solution to the problem despite much Googling, reading and trying different ideas. So, on to the details of the problem.

My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 edition. I am on an internal office network in the 10.10.101.xx range. I have PuTTY running to a Linux box on the 10.10.95.xx range. These two networks are controlled by routers which limit traffic between them. I have SSH (port 22) punched through on my router so I can get to the 10.10.95.xx subnet. So, I have a tunnel from my Windows 7 machine to the Linux server. From there I attempt to connect to Windows XP Pro SP 3 machine which is part of a domain. This works fine from a Windows XP machine, incidentally. When I try to connect via a tunnel I have set up (localhost:3395 to 10.10.95.5:3389), I get an error which says “Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one these reasons: 1) Remote access to the server in not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network”

Again, this exact same setup using Windows XP as the local machine works fine. Also, if I use the same setup to connect to a Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Server it works without a problem (both servers exist on the 10.10.95.xx subnet). I have turned off the firewalls on both computers to make sure it is not a firewall problem.

Anyone run into a problem like this? Looking for any possible solution to this problem. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Hello,

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to remote in onto a Windows 7 Machine so that you can run your SSH software, is that correct?

The first thing is to check your RDP settings on the Windows 7 Machine - Right Click Computer and click properties. On the left hand side click Advanced System Settings. Click the remote tab and select the option for "Allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop (less secure)"

    Try the RDP again.

I guess I wasn't clear. I am remoting in from a Windows 7 machine to a Windows XP Pro machine via an SSH tunnel. The tunnel is confirmed as correct as using the same tunnel, I can RDP from a Windows XP machine to the Windows XP Pro machine. I also can RDP from the Windows 7 machine via the tunnel to a Windows 2003 Server without any problem. I can also RDP locally from my Windows 7 machine to another machine runinng XP Pro on my local network not using a tunnel.

Somehow, my combination of Windows 7 x64 to Windows XP Pro via an SSH tunnel does not work. It is very frustrating.

I finally figured it out. I had to set the route on the system I was SSHed into because it was going through a gateway to get to the XP machine I was trying to RDP into. I ran tracert to the host to figure out that it was going through the gateway and then issued route add -net 10.10.96.1 gw 10.10.95.253 eth0 which added the route through the gateway at 10.10.95.253. Then RDP via the SSH tunnel worked like a champ. I am glad I finally figured this out and I hope this helps others with similar problems.
