RDP via SSH Tunnel Windows 7 to Windows XP not working
I am having a problem with Remote Desktop that I have not for the life of me been able to figure out. It involves going from a Windows 7 box to an XP Pro box via an SSH tunnel and I have yet to find a solution to the problem despite much Googling, reading and trying different ideas. So, on to the details of the problem.
My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 edition. I am on an internal office network in the 10.10.101.xx range. I have PuTTY running to a Linux box on the 10.10.95.xx range. These two networks are controlled by routers which limit traffic between them. I have SSH (port 22) punched through on my router so I can get to the 10.10.95.xx subnet. So, I have a tunnel from my Windows 7 machine to the Linux server. From there I attempt to connect to Windows XP Pro SP 3 machine which is part of a domain. This works fine from a Windows XP machine, incidentally. When I try to connect via a tunnel I have set up (localhost:3395 to 10.10.95.5:3389), I get an error which says “Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one these reasons: 1) Remote access to the server in not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network”
Again, this exact same setup using Windows XP as the local machine works fine. Also, if I use the same setup to connect to a Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Server it works without a problem (both servers exist on the 10.10.95.xx subnet). I have turned off the firewalls on both computers to make sure it is not a firewall problem.
Anyone run into a problem like this? Looking for any possible solution to this problem. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
