Windows 7: Login problem to a Workgroup computer

Login problem to a Workgroup computer

My computer, with 7 RTM installed, is part of a corporate domain. I'm trying to access a shared folder on a 2000 Server, which is outside the domain. Using XP, 2003, or any other OS there I had no problem accessing the share with regular UNC e.g. \\computer. However, from the Win 7 computer I hit a brick wall every time. The login window pops up and I can't login even though I'm using a valid user. The even stranger thing is that using XP mode does allow you to access, but that's hardly a solution. Is there some network/security setting I'm missing?

Two things first are you using homegroup in win 7? second could you fill in your system specs so we know what kind of hardware you have. They are in the lower left corner of your posts

@sup3rsprt
I have tried computername\username with the same results. I noticed other users reported similar login problems. I just can't get past the login screen. even though the login details are correct I always get "logon failure: unknown username or bad password". I created new accounts and used other usernames known to work before but all failed.

@Ken
I'm not using homegroup. My computer is part of a domain. I'm trying to access a shared folder on a computer that's on the network but not part of the domain. I update my computer specs

I have the Network discovery turned on, and lowered the file sharing encryption level

Have you checked the W2K server access logs?

I ran into the same problem today. I got around it by using IP address. e.g.

\\192.168.0.100

EDIT: and another way..

I can connect by \\computername if I just null the domain part of the username

e.g.

Username: \username
Password: *******

(notice the backslash before the username)

I hope it helps.

@sup3rsprt - I tried both options as well - no dice

However, I think that there might be some progress after all (hopefully). I activated security auditing to check access logs as kegobeer suggested and encountered the following:
The logon to account: xxx
by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
from workstation: xxx
failed. The error code was: 3221225578
I checked the relevant Event ID and error code and this is what came up:
Event ID 681 Error Codes
Error: 3221225578
Description: The username is correct, but the password is wrong.
The password however is correct so I need to figure out why the server thinks it wrong. I also found this Problems logging on to a Windows 2000-based server or a Windows 2003-based server, which I will let our sys admin check out

I am still having the same problem

Hi,

I tried all the ways mentioned above but I still can not login. The server is W2k server, and I am using Windows 7.

Are there any good solutions?

Fix for 3221225578

Get Vista and Samba to work - Blogs - Builder AU

The link above is the solution. Windows 7 and Windows Vista require NTLM version 2 or better. Windows 2000 uses NTLM version 1.
