Windows 7 - Previous Versions on Network Drives

Previous Versions on Network Drives

I've got a file server running 2003 that has shadow copy set up on shares that I have set up as network drives. On XP clients you had to install a shadow copy client. On Vista it just worked built in. I'm running the Windows 7 Ultimate RTM version now and I can get previous versions on any LOCAL files, but with a network drive it searches and then says there are no previous versions available. Obviously I know there are previous versions available because I can see them for the same file on XP or Vista.

Anyone run into/solved this issue?

Have you gone to the "advanced system settings" within Windows 7 and made sure the drives are being covered by "system protection"? It's just the place I would look. May want to make sure. I hope it helps.

I looked there but only Local drives show up in that list.

Hopefully! Just to add some more information this is all on a 2003 domain with a 2003 file server (using shadow copy on the drive hosting the shares). I'm testing with my user account which is an administrator. Previous versions of files on the network drives show up and work just fine on XP and Vista but on my freshly installed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM I just get "There are no previous versions available." Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There is a report at TechNet that the issue resolved itself - there is no listed description of how.

My head jumps to indexing.

Do you happen to have the link to the technet post? I tried installing the x86 version of Windows 7 RTM in a VM out of curiosity and it can't see the previous versions either.

macro,

I ran into this and recently posted a question on TechNet about it. I included a link to your post here to show that what I was experiencing was not isolated. I also inlcuded links to all the posts that I could find on TechNet reporting something similar. One of those links is the post about the problem resolving itself. Here is the url for my post.

Windows 7 Access Server 2003 Shadow Copy?

A moderator on TechNet is researching it and I'm waiting to hear back. I think it would help if you chime in on that post.

I have a question for you. How do you have Shadow Copies set up on the server? Are the Shadow Copies located on the same volume as the files your copying or on a different volume?

The shadow copies are written to a different volume (an external drive).
