Peer Network Identiy Manager not working

    Peer Network Identiy Manager not working


    To begin with I cannot leave my homegroup or create a new password. I read other threads and went into 'Services' to start 'Peer Network Grouping' and received the message 'Windows could not start the Peer Networking Grouping service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start. Also tried to start 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' and get a message 'Windows could not start the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service on Local Computer. Error 0x80630801: 0x80630801.'

    Tried solution 1

    Delete - C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst
    My computer cannot locate this file

    Tried solution 2
    Start cmd, dialog box opened and I entered 'sfc/scannow
    Received Message 'You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility.' I am an administrator. I went to Control Panel - User Accounts to make sure. There is my name with administrator and Password protected underneath
    UPDATE:Was able to run sfc/scannow but it did not fix the issue.

    Can anyone help???

    The following thread shows a few different solutions for this problem.
    Can't start Peer Name Resolution Protocol

    This post from me may also help.
    Homegroup Not Working

    Deleting all files in the PeerNetworking folder is required.

    Located at> C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\

    Usually works to fix this problem but if you can't see this file it may be because it's a hidden system file.

    To unhide the AppData folder, go to "folder options" and click "View" tab then click where it says "show hidden system files" then hit the "Apply" button.

    After deleting the file you may need to run the Home group trouble shooter.

    Worked like a charm after "unhiding" the system folders.

    I couldn't find the AppData folder till you mentioned it was a hidden folder. That did the trick immediately. Thanks for the help.

    Yes that setting is located in Folder Options via the Control Panel. Glad I could help.

    None of these suggestions worked for me. I finally did a Windows System Restore back to the last saved point for the time that it was working properly. I had to disable anti-virus first. But it fixed it!

    Not familiar with System Restore? Just Start/Search for "System Restore" and follow the directions.

    It will not harm any of your docs, music, photos. It basically recovers your registry. Any software you've installed since the recover point will have to be reinstalled, though.

    I too also fought this for hours, and tried all the fixes, until I used Sysinternals "Process Monitor" (great tool, go get it, it's free) which showed a policy registry setting for this service that was enforced even though the group policy was unconfigured.
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Peernet Disabled=dword:00000001
    Changed it to dword:00000000 . . .

    Then the service started.

    Be sure to check the Group Policies too . . .
