Full bars for wireless network connection but internet keeps dropping

For the last 3 months my internet keeps dropping in and out, sometimes for a long period of time. But it always shows full bars in the wireless network connection on our computers. I have been on the phone to the internet company for hours and hours (each time speaking to a different person-so no help there) and they can't figure out what is wrong.

They sent me a new modem which worked for 10 mintues and then was dropping in and out again. The same issue is happening on my roommate's computer too, and I am able to access other wireless networks in other locations too with no trouble. So not an issue with our computers.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help but if anyone has had similar issues I need some advice as to why this might be happening so I can sort it out. Thanks!

You havn't mentioned how you connect to your ISP i.e. cable or telephone but if you have the same problem when you connect an ethernet cable directly from the router to any of the computers (have you tried that ?), then it may be you have a line / exchange problem and this is something your ISP should be checking given the new modem was no different.

Is this a wireless modem or router? Either way, you need to access the set up page for it and you should try changing the wireless channel to a different one.

Windows 7 tends to drop connections if the channel is overloaded by your neighbors. This happens all the time around here. :)

I found an apparent solution via a link to a site called Best Hubris
It claimed that there is a confliction between NETBIOS and NETBUI in Windows 7
I do not pretend to understand the full description of this but I followed the suggestion that by disabling the Computer browser the WIFI signal drop does not occur

Go to Administrative tools / Services / scroll for Computer Browser / Right click for Properties than stop the process , set it to Disabled / apply and back out.

This may introduce networking link problems with others on the same network but it does appear to prevent the regular dropping of the internet signal
