Now (after years OK) unable to get wireless internet connection

As of a few days my wireless access has gone. ie there is a good connection between my devices and the router (BT Voyager 2100) but no internet connection. This effects laptop, ipad and phone.
I tried switching off router, deleting the wireless network & connecting again - no joy.
I have tried Windows 7 troubleshooting without success. I did get error message that "Another computer on this network has same IP address as this computer". I don't know if this is relevant or how to fix it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Because nothing is connecting to the internet you need to reset the router, turning it off may not be enough to get it working although shutting off the router for ten minutes may work. After that you may need to go into the routers set up page and make sure every is set up correctly, set DNS address, set to use DHCP and so on, depends on the default settings of the router.

    Thanks for your reply, chev65.

I have switched off the router overnight and still no joy, so assume I have to change some settings. You say I should:
make sure every is set up correctly, set DNS address, set to use DHCP and so on, depends on the default settings of the router.
Where can I find out exactly what I need to do? I'm not aware of having made any changes to mess up what has previously worked.

I still have access to the internet on the same laptop via a wired connection to the same router. Do I therefore have to copy the wired settings to the wireless settings on the router?

Again, thanks in advance for any help.

Yes the wireless settings in the router typically need to be set up manually.

You will need to get into the routers set up page for this by typing the default gateway into the URL of your browser, usually it's 192.168.x.x. You can get the default gateway by typing ipconfig/all into an elevated command prompt. Elevated Command Prompt

Once on the wireless set up page you need to come up with an SSID "name of wireless network" and a password. If the wired connection is working then the DNS is already set.

If you change the SSID and password from the old one then you will need to change the wireless profile for this connection in Windows> "Manage Wireless Connections" which can be accessed by going to the Network and Sharing Center, you will see it there on the upper left side.

It's best to go with WPA2 with AES encryption for the wireless connection. :)

I'm OK (ish) with this bit, and have deleted the wireless profile on my laptop and set it up anew, as advised on another thread somewhere.

Thanks - will check if I have these as options.

As of this morning, I have wireless internet access again - fingers crossed that it stays. If it stays stable I'll let you know. Thanks again.

I'm not sure if the wireless came back by itself or if the adjustments helped. See if it holds up and report back what happens. :)

Thanks chev65. I'm not sure how it started working again, either.

However, it has now gone again!

I switched on the laptop, opened Network and Sharing Centre and it showed I had IPv4 internet access. Hooray. I then switched on the iPad, connected to my wifi network, it worked briefly and then reported no connection with server. I looked at the Network and Sharing Centre in the laptop and it showed I had no internet access via the wireless network. The IPv4 address had also changed, to 168.1.2, from, I think, 168.1.3. I have attached PDF file of settings.

Somewhere yesterday (have just looked and can't replicate this...) I saw that my iPad's IP address was 168.1.2 and the laptop's was 168.1.3.

Should these be different from each other?
Should either or both be the same as IPv4 Default Gateway?
Where can I change their values?

This is where I am stuck at the moment. Any further help will be much appreciated.

I have no idea why a wireless connection with an ipad would cause the entire network to drop out but after Apple's self created bonjour debacle nothing from them would surprise me.

The IP's look ok to me. If you have DHCP enabled in the routers settings you should have no problem getting an IP address. If you haven't gone into the router's set up page to make sure the wireless settings are correct now would be a good time to do so.

Neither should look like the default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is the routers gateway address.

If you can post a screen shot of your ipconfig/all it would be helpful. :)

    Thanks again, chev65.

As of last night, and again this morning, I have wifi access on the iPad! I saw elsewhere a thread about iPods & access to the Internet and someone suggested manually assigning to an iPod a static IP address outside the DHCP range. Eg 168.1.200.

I tried this on my iPad and it is working ...

So, I don't know what caused this but have my fingers crossed that I may have stumbled on a fix.

Thanks very much for your interest and suggestions. They are much appreciated.
