Network Discovery slow - ish to start

Hi guys

Bit of a weird one. My laptop has a cache SSD in it so it is quite a rapid booter. Nomally logged in from cold boot within 25-30 secs. All the start tray stuff appear pretty instantly. Apart from the wifi network icon! This takes a good 30 seconds at least to either show as connected to my network router. It will often have a yellow exclamation mark during this time and say 'identifying network'. Despite this I can launch Internet Explorer straight away and start browsing. However if I go into network it will say 'network discovery and file sharing is turned off'. Once the network connection finally establishes to show the signal bars then network discovery is fine and all is dandy.

However I am baffled as to why it takes a little while. It has done this in the past and then for no reason quickened up to be pretty muchi nstant as soon as I logged in Until today when it is back to taking a good 30 seconds at least once in the desktop view. I didn't do anything to cause this apart from reboot my router earlier in the day. Susbequent router reboots didn't speed it up. In any case I dont think it is the routers fault as other devices seem to fine. Just this laptop, the only difference being this particular laptop is the centrino 6300 so can use the 5Ghz band of my router - just as it has always done in the past. I did login to the 2.4 ghz part of it too and still the same. I have rebooted the laptop a good few times to see if it improves but so far no better. I guess it will pick up speed at some point like it has before. But it's odd why it happens, why can't network discovery turn on quicker?

Any ideas? Or is it just part of Windows 7 eccentricities?

Cheers
Wayne

Having similar problem

I was having the same problem on my Dell 1764 running Win7Pro. I was in contact with Dell support who changed a few settings.

Now, whenever I log into my laptop (from Sleep mode or cold), the network icon in the right tray has a red "x" in it which requires me to the network icon, click on my network identifier and click Connect. Before Dell did its thing, connecting to my network normally took nearly 1 minute.

Having to select my network and clicking connect is a pain where the sun don't shine!

Any ideas??

BTW - When logging into my other laptop (Toshiba Satellite) running Win7HomePremium, it take about 5 seconds to connect automatically.

Count me in as well. Until yesterday me Dell Inspiron 1545 took maybe 5-7 seconds to show connected to the network, now I also get the yellow triangle w/exclaimation mark and connection takes about 15-25 seconds.

I did download a few security updates on 5/10 but after I installed them I rebooted and used the PC all day and found no issues until 5/11. I don't think those updates created the issue. But they are the only things I can think of that would be a significant change, also updated adobe flash as well, but I can't see how that would affect the network connection ? Broadcom wireless card. Verison FIOS with actiontec wireless router.

Looking around it may well be that apple's bonjour service may be to blame. Have either of you got it installed? Unfortunately it's bundled as part of iTunes. Trouble is if I uninstall it then library/home sharing on itunes will not work so am stuck with it.

No bonjour service installed and I checked services for both the bonjour name and the unidentified service number that someone else mentioned, so definitely not the issue, also no Apple programs installed at all.

The mystery continues. Where are the gurus on this?

Yes would love to hear a guru's opinion. Bizarrely mine is back to showing more or less instant as from yesterday evening. This without tinkering with Bonjour. Why, I do not know! I was going to set the bonjour service to a delayed start. If it happens again I will try it. Shame you haven't got that because from what I have read by googling it seems to be a common cause. It comes bundled as part of the adobe photoshop and / or iTunes installations. Disabling the service is a no go for me as my family use iTunes home sharing to stream music to our apple TV and iPhones.

Having said that we have another laptop with iTunes/Bonjour installed and this has always been more or less instant picking up the network connection and turning file discovery when the desktop eventually shows. Maybe because it is a much weaker laptop with a stock mechanical hard drive causing a slower boot.

The mind boggles with Windows sometimes, trying to troubleshoot is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Not good when the missus gets cross if I spend too much time in the study problem solving the laptop!!!
