Win 7 as vpn server shows network as down but works. VPN broken

Hi
I have a Windows 7 machine (will call this the SERVER) that has been set up to accept incoming connections (VPN). When connected to the VPN externally (from Vista or 7), the PPTP adapted is assigned an IP address correctly but I am not able to see any of the resources on the server. (even when using the server IP address i.e. \\192.168.0.100. I am connecting from different network range so no conflict)

Something that I have notice, which seems strange, is that the network icon (bottom right) on the server machine is the "wireless icon" with a red cross through it. This machine has both Ethernet port and wireless adapter and prior to setting up the VPN, the network icon was showing a connection via Ethernet cable.

However, connectivity to the server machine is still the same as before I setup the VPN server. It has internet and local access and local machines can see the shared folders/resources.

Any suggesting would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
