    Painfully slow gigabit file transfers

    Hello all,

Some time lurker here, but first time poster as my network file transfers/streaming issue is really starting to grate on me. I have 3 pcs in my flat, all of which are wired with the correct cabling, via an 8 port Netgear G5608v2, giving me Gigabit throughout. The machines are as follows:

PC1: As per my system specs
    PC2: Vista x64 SP1, Athlon x2 5600, 4gb 6400 ram, Asus M3N-H/HDMI motherboard
    PC3: Win7 RTM, Athlon XP 3000, 1.5gb 3200 ram, Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe.

Each PC connects at 1Gbps according to the LAN connection status. However, any attempt to transfer or stream files from PC1 to PC2 or 3 results in a miserable transfer speed of 5-6mb at best, making transfer/streaming even the likes of a DVD a painful chore.

I've installed the latest network card driver for PC1 from Windows Update (v) but it has made no difference at all.

Any thoughts on what to do?

    Thanks.

Do you have any security software running on the computers (including the built in Windows firewall)? If so, have you verified the security software isn't the problem?

Do you experience the same thing between PC2 and PC3....or just between PC1 and the other machines?

I'm running Win7 on my main box and I've only got a 100Mbs network and I get abound 10-11.5MB/s transferring between my workstation and server.

Windows firewall only (I've yet to get round to installing some A/V), and no, I've not tried that out admittedly. I'll look at temporarily disabling the Windows firewall to see what happens. I've not any issues previously, but this is a new (to me) motherboard.

I'm sure that PC2 & PC3 are fine for streaming/transfers - I will double check to make sure.

I've read a few things about disabling RDC so I'll try that to see if any difference is made.

    Thanks for the replies.

Try using the latest driver from the manufacture (i.e. not Windows Update) of the NIC. As well going into Device Manager and adjust the properties of the NIC there.

Don't bother. RDC is not effecting anything, RDC is only used with Offline Files. Those who keep saying disabling RDC, really don't have a clue.

Also, make sure that all of the drivers for PC1 are up to date, either from WU or the manufacturer. You should also take a look at the drives in PC1 - highly fragmented drives, drives with sector errors, etc, could possibly be the bottleneck.

    A silly question.

You are not copying data from an USB disk connected to PC1, right?

PC2 to PC3 is fine - not super fast, at 35mbps approx, but fast enough.

I tried both of those things, but to no avail. I disabled RDC already, but may as well leave it off.

All drivers are good afaik. As noted above, the latest drivers from Realtek were no use, though I may try them again to see.

No, I'm not. Internal sata drives all the way.

    Cheers.

What about the drives? Have they been defragmented lately?

Not too bad on that front - the main drive I've been trying to stream from is sitting at 7.2% fragmented according to Perfect Disk 10. I'm defragging currently.

I tried disabling the Windows Firewall, it made no difference.

I also tried installing an older Vista driver from the Realtek site. The driver installed fine under compatibilty mode, still connects at 1.0 Gbps but streaming is still no use.

    Thanks.
