How can I stop folders from showing on network?
Bit if a long story here but I'll try to cut it down as tight as I can. Also to add, while it might sound like I know this stuff well from this post, my knowledge it spotty and more from just picking up things, so please...for any replies, don't leave out any critical details by assuming I already know them.
I have had one PC that I was sharing some particular folders on as some communication software required it but I'm not doing that any more. PC has Windows 7 64 Ult on it and was sharing to a LT with XP.
So as the LT was old I just got a new one and now this has 64 Ult too and now I see how with even though it has the folder in the "Shares" section of my "Computer Management" of C:\Users, all it shows on the Network are the Default and Public folders.
But what I could see on my older PC were several more including the main user folder which while technically that had the default lock symbol on them and by root are not directly accessible, still I don't want anyone to know even exist as its kinda not helping keeping things secure.
So I went into them an unshared the folders I had shared as I gather this is why they were showing but for some reason even though I had unshared the folders, the route to the folder was still showing, and thus so were the mains too.
So I tried every configuration with anything to do with sharing and the ownerships and permissions I could in both "Simple Sharing" and "Advanced" to set them to be unshared and rebooted both machines many times but they just wouldn't stop showing.
So finally in "Computer Management", I just deleted the C:\Users share thinking with the ones in the folder already locked I would just make another one and the default unlocked ones would show just like on my LT, but when I did this and the share up verbatim like the one on my LT, now all the folders in my Users folder show.
Again granted, the ones that are locked are not accessible at all so I did fix how some stuff was showing in some of them, but as far as for my original want to not show the folders in the in Users folder, this is even worse then before.
So in looking at my laptop as a reference, I again went through every conceivable aspect of sharing and ownership and permissions and set up every configuration I could find exactly the same, yet despite it all, I cannot have a share built of just C:\Users and only have the unlocked folders showing and nothing else.
In the end I eventually just gave up and made just a share of the Public folder alone and left it like that, but I am really puzzled as to why when I have duplicated everything I can in the C:\Users and shares of the folders in my Laptop on my PC, that I can't have only the same folders showing on the Network?
So if anyone has any ideas I could look at, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for any help.
