Windows 7: Copying from external HD or network folders

Hi Everyone

I am new here and new to Windows 7 which I installed on the weekend in order to run my media through the Windows 7 MC.

I ran into a problem when I try to copy from external HD (USB external drives) or shared network folder.

Every time I try to copy something, and it doesn’t matter how I do it whether it is CTRL+C or right click and then Copy, Windows Explorer crashes.

This is very annoying since I have to then switch to Vista (dual boot) and do it from there.

Is this a known problem?
Are there any workarounds or solutions to this?

Hmm... sounds quite unusual... Do you have any anti-virus on the Windows 7 Partition? Run a scan and check the out come. Also please specify your Windows 7 Build.

It is not the USB port that crashes Windows Explorer. When I connect Disk on Key I can copy from that, but when I connect the external HD (LaCie 750GB) and I try to copy from the HD then Explorer crashes.

This is however also happens from a shared folder, when I try to copy from there, again, crashes Explorer.

BTW Im using Windows 7 release 7100. Is there a newer release than that?

No, you are already at the highest build (aside from the RTM build, 7600)

For a last resort, you can clean-install Windows 7 again. If you want to keep your settings, programs etc, do the following:

1.Open Windows Easy transfer, Easy transfer will prompt you...

"What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer?"

select the option: External hard disk or USB. After that, it will prompt you again. Select: "This is my old computer". Then it will collect settings and it will ask you where to save the file. Save it anywhere you can remember then later...(go to number 2)

2.Copy that file to A USB/CD or upload it to a file hosting site like RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting.

3. Do the clean install, then on the clean install Windows 7, open up that easy transfer file that it saved, it will extract the settings from the file, and, hopefully, that should fix the problem.

I hate to disagree with a fellow user but there are many, many newer build. there is 7177,7201,7260,7264, and 7600. All builds up to 7260 will register with RC keys.

Could you go into event viewer (type event viewer in search), goto the windows log>aplication tab and tell us what errors (lines with red mark on them) are there?

I do not have this problem. But I use this to copy: Add Copy To / Move To on Windows 7 or Vista Right-Click Menu :: the How-To Geek It works fine in Windows 7.

i always use "teracopy", better then the inbuilt copy-move.

Where did you acquire this copy of Windows 7?
