Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer - no error code

    Hi guys,

So sometime within the last month or so I noticed my laptop was starting to act funny when trying to access files over the homegroup on my desktop--it was asking me for my credentials every time I restarted the computer, and wouldn't remember them even when I checked the box. As best I could tell it was using my computer's name as my domain, so when I typed in the username/password I also had to type in the "domain" of my desktop, which was simply its name.

Anyway, I didn't think much of it until recently I wanted to fix this problem, and I noticed more problems. I first removed both computers from the homegroup. Then, I tried to make a new homegroup on my laptop. But attempting this results in the error message you see in the thread title, and no error code at all.

However, I can still create a homegroup with my desktop, and I can even join that homegroup from my laptop. But after joining, I cannot access the video/audo/photo folders that are shared on the desktop and the icons for them are generic, not the unique ones for each folder type. However, once I share any additional folders from the desktop, I can then access all the folders from the laptop, once I have entered the same login information it had started asking me for weeks ago. Oddly, my desktop can access those same folders on my laptop without any trouble, as could my wife's laptop!

I have scoured the Internets looking for answers. I've tried several solutions, including some that were posted in this sevenforums thread, but to no avail.

Just to be clear what I have tried so far:

    1. deleting everything in the \Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking folder and rebooting

    2. checking the correct services were turned on.

    3. ensured all computer names are different

    4. tried two different routers, in case it was a hardware problem (one router is the one on which I had no problem using homegroups until a month ago)

    5. checking IPv6 is enabled, and adding the registry edit mentioned elsewhere to ensure it is enabled.

    6. the usual homegroup troubleshooting, on both the laptop and the desktop

    7. deleted all my Windows credentials

    8. synced the clocks/timezones

    9. tried using a wired connection. The desktop is on wi-fi as well, though, and has no problems.

I think that's about it. I may try my oldest system restore if no one else has any other ideas, but I'd rather not do that.

    Tech details:
    Windows 7 Home Premium x64
    Alienware M11x R3 w/Killer Wireless-N 1103
Linksys WRT-160N with DD-WRT (original router)
TP-Link WDR-3300 with stock firmware (new router)

    Thanks all!

    Hi,
Assure that there is no HomeGroup in the network and then perform the following steps. So you must leave the Homegroup from all networked machines first.

    1. Use the Troubleshooting tool. Please open Control Panel and click the Troubleshooting icon. Click "Network and Internet" and select HomeGroup.

    2. Can the Troubleshooting tool find the cause and fix the issue? If not, please move on to the next steps.

    3. Verify the following relevant services.
    a. Click "Start", type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search Bar and press Enter.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    b. Right click the "Peer Networking Identity Manager" service and choose Properties.
    c. Please click the Stop button to stop the service temporarily.
    d. Access the following folder:
    C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking
    e. Clear all the files and folders inside.
    f. Start the following service gain: Peer Networking Identity Manager
    g. Reboot the computer and you should be able to rejoin the HomeGroup.

    4. Enable IPv6
    a. Open "Network Connections" window, right click the "Local Area Connection" and click Properties.
    b. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)"
    c. Click OK.

    5. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine then try to create or set up the Homegroup again.

    Hi chev65,

Thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately those steps aren't working for me, still unable to create a homegroup

Have you tried running the sfc/scannow command to see if there is any file corruption?

    Worked for me

    Chev65's solution:
<<<3. Verify the following relevant services.
    a. Click "Start", type "services.msc"...>
Finally worked for me after hours of trying everything else

Oops, spoke too soon. I was able to connect to the existing network after typing in code (fresh Win7-32 install on a different HD on same PC that has worked before) but now it can't see others, and others cannot see it.

    Greetings,

I have got a curious problem. On my Home Network I have got two computers (B-Win 7 Pro 64bit - joined and A-Win 7 Pro HPremium 64bit-primary/created) using a homegroup. They seem to work fine.
I have tried to connect the third computer (C-Win 7 Pro 64bit) to the same homegroup. All in vain.

Once clicking on join - password I have a message that Windows cannot set up Homegroup on this computer. Then after launching troubleshooting function the join button becomes 'create homegroup,.

All the computers are the same Bitdefender Total Security 2015 software installed with the same setting.

All the computers are on the same router - Linksys EA6500.
Computers A and B are WLAN-ed and B and C are LAN-ed to the main router which is connected to bridged one (also Linksys EA6500), that is computers B and C are on LAN connection while an A is connected wirelessly to B and C via router. All three computers are connected and can 'see each other' via Home Network. All are in the same Workgroup (name) with different names. All have the same user account with the same credentials (name, login pass).

I have already tried all the potential solution to the problem I have found on the web. Nothing seems work.
I have deleted C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking folder content, Restarted all pointed services...

I will deeply appreciate any helpful clue leading to solve this bizarre issue.
    Thank you in advance.
