Connecting two Laptops With wifi

hello all. i have two laptops at home. i want to share files with them using the Wi-FI. i created an ad-hoc network and was able to share files but the thing was that the speed of the transfer is very slow around 700 Kbps. Is there a way i can improve the speed?

One way is to connect both physically with a special Cat5 crossover ethernet cable, which defeats the wireless. The second way is to use an external hard drive and transfer that way. You can also attach both lappys to the router via Cat5's and use a wired solution.
