Sure you can if you follow my instructions above. Run the troubleshooter etc. This is the trick.
I ran the troubleshooter (running it right now as I type)

    troubleshoot network problems (skipped)

    starting homegroup diagnostics......

I'm trying to create a homegroup (selected)

"to create a homegroup, open homegroup in control panel"

I open the "open homegroup" button

COMPUTER 1 HAS CREATED A HOMEGROUP ON THE NETWORK.

only option is "join now" or cancel.

    Where did I go wrong?

Gotta do this from memory cause I have a working homegroup

Let's try this. On the computer claiming to have created the homegroup use network and sharing to LEAVE the homegroup. Don't just stop sharing when it asks, actually LEAVE it. Reboot that computer to clear it from advertising the homegroup on the network. Then reboot the other computer to clear that homegroup state and try to create the homegroup there and share it back the other way...

This is what I just did:

I leave the homegroup in computer 1 (desktop).

I restart computer 1 and computer 2. Both "cleared" the home group

I create a new homegroup in computer 2 (wireless laptop).

I try to join computer 1 to homegroup and I get the message "Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer" but computer 1 can see the new homegroup name

run the troubleshooter normally now and follow the instructions. it should ask whether something it did fixed the problem and if not to do it on the other machine...

It's not supposed to "find" anything. It tries to fix stuff and then you try to join and see what it does.

okay I ran the troubleshooter again and put in the password again and I get the same message.

"Windows can not setup a homegroup on this computer"

but it recognizes the other homegroup which is already created.

Just to report here.... had homegroup running before.... did an upgrade from beta to 7100, and put in the pass to homegroup and voila! Could even still see the lappy on the homegroup which is still on the beta... so atleast the issue of backwards comp thru the betas on homegroup works, atleast on 7000/7100.

i would start from scratch on your homegroup here, as it seems tho you went thru some settings and something is a miss from all the times you have been thru it.

delete both homegroups create a new named homegroup on pc1 with pass, then on pc2 double check workgroup name. No reason to disable ipv6 if you have already fyi.

also it would be wise to atleast set your dns server to your router ip in tcp/ip settings.
