Internet Connection works but web applications are not. Needs help.

    Hi there.

Let me start by saying that I have a background in computer programming and so I understand most jargon, however I don't have much experience with computer hardware problems and networking, so I may not have tried some very simple things. I believe I've tried everything and I have thus far found no solution to ym problem nor have I even identified what the problem is.

So, yesterday morning I was browsing the web as usual, when a power cut happened, obviously stopping me from browsing. When the power came back on, I tried to use my PC again. My network adapter was able to connect to my router once it came back on and very simple programs on my computer were working (for example, little Windows 7 gadgets on my desktop, such as news feeds and even my anti-virus updater) but when I tried to log on to Windows Live Messenger or any of my web browsers (I've tried IE, Firefox and Chrome), nothing works and I can't connect to the internet.

Each browser has the same problem. I can connect to my default homepage (google) each time, but it takes longer than usual, but then it doesn't let me connect to another website.

This problem appears to be localized, although I'm having the same problem on both my laptop and my desktop PC, whereas my brother's desktop (which I'm writing from now) and our family's laptop both work fine and are free from this issue. In order to fix it, I have tried resetting my computers, my network adapter AND my router several times, but there is no change. I have tried a full system restore to a restore point 7 days prior to the problem occurring, but no change. I have tried troubleshooting the connection but nothing happens. I have also run a full virus scan with AVG Free and a spyware scan with Windows Defender, both came up clean.

I activated my mobile phone as a wireless hotspot and the computer was able to connect to that with no problems and enable full browsing, but once it connected back to my router, the same problem resurfaced, yet the other 2 PCs in our house still work fine.

Any help with this baffling probem?

I can't say exactly what the problem might be because power out's can cause many different problems but I had a similar problem a few days ago where I could not sign into MSN messenger or my browser IE.

I tried running sfc/scannow command but it found no problems so I performed a start up repair from the Windows CD and it somehow fixed everything. So if you have a Windows CD handy, running the start up repair is an option.

System images come in handy for problems like this.

You might be seeing a backed-up copy of your start page in the browsers.

Are you sure you actually have an IP connection?

Or you might have a connection but no nameserver.

Try "ping 74.125.230.248" or "ping www.google.com".
If the first one works but the second one doesn't, check your nameserver configuration.
