Have internet connection but can't use browser and several programs

On a Laptop with Windows Home Premium (Acer OEM) I have Windows Defender installed. Then downloaded AVG Antivirus around 1:st week of August. After the end of trial period AVG asked me if I want to upgrade to paid version or remain using free version with restricted options. I chose to keep the free version.

After som days Windows error center recommend me with a Flag to install a Antivirus product and offer a Web page with alternative product. I then wanted to try any other Antivirus product.

I decided to try Bullgard Security, downloaded it and then started installation. During installation Bullgard ask me if it first should remove previous security products and listed Windows Defender and AVG as installed or if I want them to remain in the system.

I chose to leave them and get through with the installation and Bullgard then want to restart Windows. During login and start up procedures Bullgard installation program started automatically. Its asked again if I want to first uninstall the other security product. This time I answered Yes and was then asked if I want to uninstall the other product one by one. It then started AVG uninstall program. If You use default options AVG keeps some minimal security detection and remains on the computer. In the tray You see the AVG icon, but because it was in the normally hided section I didn't see that AVG was loaded after the Restart of Windows.

Suddenly I couldn't reach any Web pages whit any browser, also I couldn't run installation program that download a part from the net before it could start installation so Bullgard couldn't bee installed.

Window says that I have Internet connection and You can use for instance Windows update and several programs update function. I first used AVG installation file to repair AVG. I then used normal Control Panel - Uninstall for AVG and AVG uninstall program started. I go to advanced options and chose to totally uninstall AVG and delete all user data. I also on another computer downloaded a AVG-tool that detects remaining AVG installation and files and then remove them. It couldn't find any thing.

After next restart the http protocol error still remains, I first think it was faulty DNS settings for the network adapter and manually set them as another functional Laptop. That's didn't help.
Even if I put in IP-address in the browser address field it says it can't reach that page and installation program that want to download parts from the Internet and for instance Spotify says that there is no Internet connection.

I have asked several support persons and friends with good network knowledge, no one have ever encountered this problem before.

I can of course save data and reinstall Windows, update Windows after reinstallation and once again install all programs, but if I could avoid that it would be nice!

    Thankful for any advice!

I have portable version of SIW and can save and send report files if that could help any one to analyze the problem.

Did you see any proxy setting configuration in your browser? If you are not using any proxy settings, remove them and try browsing again.

No proxy settings in Internet Explorer, Chrome, Maxthon or Safari...

Have gone in to settings for each of my network connection adapters (LAN and WiFi), they used to get DNS-settings from IP provider automatically but changed to settings from another Laptop with Win 7 Ultimate that has dedicated DNS setting and changed to those values - wasn't that either.

Windows shows in Network map that the PC IS connected to Internet, Windows Update and other program that get updates from a dedicated web address (no DNS involved) is working.

As mentioned before, if you put in IP address instead of web address it doesn't work either!

Installation program files that are small in size and connect to a server to download the rest of needed data during installation process doesn't work either!

I haven't seen this problem before spite Working since 1985 with computers. Both as a support personal for a Company that use to have 40 000 employees (LM Ericsson worldwide Support).

I have also worked as Microsoft & Novell Certified network technician and as a Programmer and System Developer. Have since 2008 doesn't work professional because of sickness but keep working when I can despite my illness in my own small Company, (repairs, advices and selling of hardware/software) follow all sort of Computer forums and read a lot, both on web and Magazines!

If all this is true then you should have no problems with the system image that you saved on a separate drive before all these problems occurred...?

    Thanks for the irony Chet!

It so happens that before I went on an extended trip did a backup with Acronis True Image. Due to the lack of external storage I saved that copy on my Laptop No 1. When I come home from the trip and start up my Laptop 1 who was at home (I have Laptop 2 with me on the trip because of size) did not find any computer boot partition.

I bought an extra external disk 3TB to be able o make a more recent copy of the contents of the computer before I tried to repair it. Because of lack of money (because of Low sick leave) to buy more disk storage and therefore lack of external storage I only have and older version from mid June.

Laptop 2, where I am now having problems, I used to make a USB installed Acronics so that I could back up Laptop 1. I have been at the hospital for 14 days, I have not had time after that to repair the Laptop 1, where ironically, copy of Lapop 2 is ...

Do You really think that I am lazy with backups? I worked for 10 years making backups and backup procedurers for a Company with 40 000 employes.

I'm just tired and with low income because of sickness. The 27 of September I have to do a 14 hours surgery. I'm just tired, have no financial opportunity to get paid support and is short of time because of all things I have to plan before. Long time of rehab after the surgery.

I really have to get Laptop 1 and Laptop 2 functional because now I'm relying on a Laptop 3 from 2007 and the iPad 3 I'm now writing on!

Sorry to hear of your health and financial issues. Wish you luck in that regard.

I take it your software firewall is appropriately configured.

I think I'd remove all AV software (using each app's removal tools) to see if your connection returns. If it does then reinstall your choice of AV software. Basically reverse the steps that were taken that apparently caused you to lose the connection in the first place.

    Can you ping anything?
