My computer will not recognize new modem

I have this problem, which I’ve worked around so far, but it’s frankly driving me mad.

It all started, as it always does, with a boy and his dream to upgrade. So, I went out and bought a Motorola SBG6580 to replace my Comcast craptastic modem and Belkin wireless router. I installed it and got Comcast to recognize the modem and all that. Then the problems start:

There are three things hooked into the modem/router. Two desktops and one Blu-Ray player, all but one of the desktops works through the SBG6580. The desktop that won’t work through the SBG just won’t detect or adapt to the new IP address. It refuses to.

Here comes the fun part. If I run the old (Belkin) router into the new (SBG6580) and plug the one desktop that won’t connect through the SBG6580 into the Belkin it will work.

What I would like to achieve is to just use the SBG6580 and not the janky work-around I have now.

I have troubleshot this to death with both Comcast’s Signature Support and Motorola’s crappy techs. I have tried them both now twice. Motorola’s support is good for people trying to set things up, but not up to the task of in-depth problem solving. Comcast was pretty decent and they helped me get to the work around.

I have tried resetting modem, all sorts of IP renews, some crazy command prompt commands that I didn’t even know existed.

One thing that I think might be throwing the wrench in this is I have the two desktops set up as a home network through Windows 7. I have no idea how I did this as it was a long time ago. I think I somehow told my one desktop to only recognize the Belkin router? I don’t know. It’s crazy.

I have run out of bullets and before my cheap butt pays some tech to come out to my pad and silently judge my massive porn browsing history to fix this I thought I would turn to the internet. Please help!

While I am not a total NOOB here, it would best if you would explain any troubleshooting tips as you would to a particularly gifted child or a golden retriever.

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Please run this code from the command prompt window
    :

    Code:
    ipconfig/all > %UserProfile%\Desktop\IP.txt
That should create a text file on your desktop.

Please attach that text file to your next post.

    Thanks for the file.

Everything looks good there (e.g. not an excess of 6to4 adapters, DHCP is on...).

Please test all of the ports on the Motorola router using one of the computers that can connect to the internet.

Plug the problematic computer into one of the known good ports on the Motorola router.

Do you get a green light by the LAN jack on the problematic computer?

Restart the problematic computer and run that code again to create new text file.

If need be, reconnect the problematic computer to the Belkin router to get it online.

Please attach the new text file to your next post.

FWIW: is the ip.txt file from the machine that can't get an IP from your new router? the SBG6580

You might have to copy the ip.txt file to a usb drive and then over to the machine that you are using to
    get to the w7 forums.

Rich: The first text file I posted was for the problem computer which was connected via the janky work-around. This text file, that is attached, is for the non-work-around mode.

UsernameIssues: All ports on the SBG6580 have tested good. The LAN port on the problem computer shows orange and green lights at all times and with regard to that, I've uninstalled the port and reinstalled it and I've updated the software driver in previous troubleshooting attempts.

Currently, the computer is back in work-around mode, but the text file attached is from the non-work-around mode.

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the help here. I quite perplexed.

In just about any circumstance you would be far better served going with a standard modem plugged into a standard router like your Belkin.

For creating a proper network using any type of modem/router combo unit is not the way to go.

Doing this would also solve your problem beyond any shadow of a doubt. :)

A separate modem and a separate router has some advantages over a combo. I'll leave it to chev65 to make that case.

Does the LAN jack on the problematic computer have an orange/amber light when connected to the Belkin? And what color is that light when connected to the Motorola modem?

Does the problematic computer get an IP from the Motorola router if it is the only computer connected to the Motorola router?

    Please try...
...disconnecting all computers from the Motorola router
...connecting only the problematic computer to the Motorola router
    ...restarting the Motorola router
    ...restarting the problematic computer

If the problematic computer still has a 169 IP address, then reconnect all of the other computers.

Assign the problematic computer a static IP* outside of the DHCP IP address range of the Motorola router. If you need help with that, please post a screenshot of the interface on the Motorola router that sets the Starting Local Address and the number of CPE's**.

*See this post - if need be:
Assigning static IP address on Linksys E3000 router?

**While I'm certainly not preoccupied with the use of proper grammar or spelling (as evidenced by my preference for thru), I did wonder why CPE is possessive in the SBG6580 User Guide. Perhaps the author was going for Customer's Premises Equipment. If the author meant CPEs for a plural, then I'm fine with that, even if equipment is already plural.

Thanks, guys. I think I am going to just throw this thing in bridge mode and call it a day. Sometimes you just have to man-up and redefine your goals!

    Thank you all.

:::posts a picture of a happy golden retriever:::

    :-)

...while it would be nice to know if a static IP would force it to work, I understand that you have lots of frustrating hours tied up in this and you just want the computer to be online.
