I've tried visiting the location of my server through the Chrome web browser, but given the hardware I'm using to transmit the server, I'm unable to scroll through its interface.
I've also tried to use a file explorer, but in order to view images.. my HDD has to download them first. Otherwise, it works great.
I'm not planning to ditch the FTP method, I love it. I just need a solution to view photos, that doesn't require any downloading.
No matter what method you use to get the images, they must always be downloaded to your machine, and then opened locally. At most, you may use a program that downloads to temporary folders and then deletes, but as a rule of thumb, every thing you see on the screen IS on your local machine, somewhere.
For regular FTP, or FTPS or SFTP, filezilla is a great tool. It allows such function of viewing files without saving them. FileZilla - Client Download
Yes I've tried FireZilla, WinSCP, and SmartFTP.
SmartFTP can view pictures which is nice, but I think it downloads every image in order to keep up with the previews, which kinda defeats the purpose of keeping pictures up in FTP. Whether or not SmartFTP deletes this data on program exit, I'm unsure. I've got enough storage on my system to store tons of image data, but still.
Kinda disappointing.. I was really hoping there was some way to view FTP in web form, I thought for sure there was a way to do this
I doesn't work in that way unfortunately. For computers to display anything, it MUST have the info locally, no matter what. It's logical that, for the computer to know what to show, it must have the file in order to display the image, so a temporary download is a must.
You may try accessing the FTP with a regular web browser if you like, any one provides such capability. But it's the same thing, when you click on a link to a file, it will be downloaded before showing, just like any other website.
I've tried viewing FTP through Chrome.. it works well, but I can only view filenames. I can click them and pull up the image, but I'd rather see a preview instead.
It will always require downloading. Just the way it is. Cannot create a preview of the image without downloading it.
I'm not interested in downloading any images to my computer though. I want to visit FTP through a web format only, similar to how any other regular webpage works.
For example.. when people visit Amazon.com, computers do not auto-download the images viewed when visiting that site (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong). I want my FTP to work in the same way, and I really don't understand the limitation in this. The location of my FTP has its own (IP) address and can function just like any regular webpage, minus the previews of course
You are wrong.
That is what people have been attempting to tell you. Data (pictures, text, music...) must come to your computer first before you can see/read/hear it. That is the way things work. That is what fills the temporary internet files folder = the data from the web sites that you visit.
