Laptop and Desktop not detecting each other

    Hi All

I have a simple home lan setup. Desktop(Win7 Ultimate) wired to router and laptop(Win Home BAsic) using WiFi. Both have All Printer and file sharing Enabled. The desktop cann see the Laptop in 'Network' but not the other way around. However, even though I cannot see the Desktop from the Laptop's 'Network' I can access the public folder of the desktop by using : \\desktop-pc\users\public command in cmd or search.

Now why Is the Desktop not visible on the Laptop's network(though I can access it) and why can't the Desktop access the Laptop's shared public folder even though it can see it in his network?

And oh yes, I tried disabling the firewalls, but no luck...

    Thank you

    Hello,

Do you have a Homegroup setup?
Home sweet homegroup: Networking the easy way in Windows 7

Also, try creating an indentical User Name and Password on both computers.

Another option to access shared folder/drive from another computers is by Clicking on the Start button and typing then press enter: \\IPAddress\Sharedfolder or Shareddrive.

See if the above suggestions help or not.

    Hi.

Thank you for your answer. I tried to create a Homegroup but the laptop cannot connect to. It just does not show up for him. I can access the public folder on the desktop from the laptop but not vice versa. Both have same security setting(minimum) and both have all sharing options enabled...

First thing check if it has same Homegroup on both the computers.
Make sure you are able to ping the IP address of both the computers ( fox ex. Ping the IP address of desktop on laptop and laptop on desktop).
