Ethernet issues

I have an active highspeed modem and wireless router. Three laptops which work fine.
However I cant connect by ethernet to the modem on my acer laptop. If connect by ethernet to the wireless router it connects just fine. but take the ethernet leading to the router and connect directly to laptop it says unidentified network / no internet access.
When I plug the modem back into the router and connect router to laptop via ethernet it connect to the internet no problem. Please help. I need this laptop to connect to single port modems to provision the modems for work, got new job as Cable/ Internet installer. the other laptop connect to modem via ethernet just fine.
