Cant access internet with new laptop, only limited access

My little brother gave me his laptop so I reformatted his laptop and when I try to to connect to the internet via WiFi I could connect but I would have limited access. I can connect to the internet with my old laptop, iphone and xbox. But I cant connect to my newly reformatted laptop. Please help.

Have you loaded all the system drivers for all the installed hardware? You get them from the manufacturers website, download area.

If you have one of the following, look at there site for your Model's downloads. Some laptops need "wireless drivers" which connect your laptop's antenna to the router.

If you have another brand, you may look on the internet for other brands.

Use another computer in your household.

Ok so I connected an internet cable directly to the router and accessed the internet from there. I then started to download the graphics driver from the HP website. It started installing, I left the room for like 2 minutes came back and the whole screen turned black. I waited 10 minutes and it just stayed black. I turned it off with the power button and turned it back on. Any thoughts?

Ok so i downloaded most of the driver updates but everytime I finish downloading it says It might have not installed correctly, And it says" install using reccomended settings" or "It installed correctly".. So when I pressed the "install with reccomended settings" for the Broadcom wireless thingy it just had an error so i just canceled. So for the other 2 drivers, Intel turbo boost and some other Lan one, I installed I just click the red exit box when they asked me it might not have installed correctly since it didint help the first time. When I try to use the WiFi again it still doesnt work. Still have limited connectivity.

Ok so I updated all of my windows updates. I updated most of my drivers but when i try to install the intel hd graphics driver it keeps failing. But I still cant connect to WiFi. Still have limited activity. Please help.

I hope I can help as much as I can!
I have a PC with Windows CP loaded on it and it had lost WiFi too. We re-installed the wireless drivers, yet it failed. Hopefully you won't have those issues.

I had an older HP which in the upgrade to 7, failed also. I currently have a eMachines PC, so I use a cable for my Internet. Maybe try connecting it to a router with a cord if it could be at a convince to you.

Use a Windows 7 disk or USB and use the "Repair Computer" feature for any registry issues.

I'll revisit tomorrow!

Ok so I'm in the library and I can access their internet via WiFi but I cant with my house. So maybe it has something to do with the router? I tried unplugging the router and plugging it back in and it doesnt work. Still says limited connection. Need some insight, please help.

No reason to bump. you have some type of conflict between the router and your WiFi card or the WiFi card is failing and can't get a good connection with the Wifi router. There is Nothing anyone on this site can do to help you. It is more then likely a hardware problem.

I will take a shot in the dark at this and ask if you can post your ipconfig /all output.

To run ipconfig:

1: Click on the Start Orb.
2: In the search bar type in CMD press enter.
3: once the command prompt opens type in "ipconfig /all" no quotes.
4: After you receive your output you can either use the snipping tool to post the image or you can right click on the command prompt select mark, Highlight all the text, Press enter, Then paste it in here.

it cant be hardware failure because i can access the internet in the library via wifi.

Run the Command prompt again, but this time when you type in CMD look for the Icon in the search results right click on it and choose run as administrator then run the commands below.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Then run
ipconfig /all

post you're results again.

The ipconfig data you posted is from having the Eithernet cable connected and the WiFi card has a Default auto Windows IP address, "Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.229.153(Preferred)".

That means you are not connected to any Wireless signal at all.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable, Reboot the wireless router, Unplug it from the wall outlet for a second then plug it back in, Click on the WiFi network icon in windows, Find your SSID for your home wireless signal and select connect. you should then have to type in a Password. If you don't have to type in a password or it does not connect at all then you have a problem with the Router.

If you can connect then do another IPconfig.

If you are getting this Limited Connectivity warning without having a connection to a wireless router that is normal.

Ok i unplugged the ethernet cable and i unplugged the router and plugged it back in. Then i tried to connect to the router again I didnt have to put in a password, I guess it was saved...? heres the results of the ipconfig /all

Ok I have reviewed all your posts in this thread and I did not see what make and model router you are using. Please post the make and model number of the router you are using.

As to the Wireless (WiFi) connection you Do Not have one. The IP address the WiFi card in your computer is getting is a Generic Windows IP address handed out by Windows to any and all Network cards when it can not get one from a routers DHCP server. That is the 169.254.x.x address.

So you do not have a REAL IP address for your WiFi card.

So not having a real ip address is stopping me from getting internet through wifi? And what can I do to get a real ip address?
