LAN connection doesn't work in some laptops

Hi. My room mates and i recently got an internet connection. Unfortunately, we only have one LAN cable so we need to take turn in using it. It works fine on my netbook but not to them. Windows troubleshoot it and says "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration". What should we do?

P.S. At first, i also can't connect via LAN but i windows troubleshoot it, says DHCP was disabled so i enabled it. Then tadaaaa! I'm connected to the internet.

This is most likely because your connection is only using a modem instead of a router. Modem's only support a single machine and are tied into the mac address of that machine. If you need more connections you need a router connected to the modem.

yep, we're using a modem. so, even it has 4 LAN ports, i could only use one?

by the way, i was able to fix the connection problem with my room mate's netbook. it was the same case as mine(disabled DHCP). so now, it's working on two netbooks but not on my other room mate's laptop. i feel bad he can't use the internet.

In that case it's a modem/router which should work fine.

I'm not sure why DHCP would be disabled on those laptops because by default it should be enabled.

On the laptop with the problem, make sure DHCP is enabled then go to the Network and Sharing center, then look left side to "Manage Wireless Connections" and set up a profile for the wireless connection.

Make sure the type of Security and Encryption are the same as the modem/router is using, then just type in the SSID and password.

DHCP is enabled in the laptop. I've set up an ad hoc wifi. The laptop can connect but there's no internet access. Both Local Area Connection and Wireless Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

    Who is your service provider.

    1, BT goto 192.168.0.254
    2, Virgin Goto 192.168.0.1
    3, Others goto 192.168.1.1 or Virgin's.

Open it and enter admin for user and the password is on the rear of the modem.

Once there FIND Modem mode and disable. This will enable your LAN cables too work. And maybe Wifi.

Why would you need to set up an AdHoc if you already have a wireless router?

Can I see the ipconfig/all from this laptop?

From the IP address showing you do have a modem/router, the netbook appears to be connected to Ethernet while the laptop appears to be trying to connect through Ethernet but isn't receiving a valid IP.

On the laptop with the problem try saving the file below, unzip and run the file on that machine until it reboots then try to connect again.
