Windows 7: Fax and Scan

I bought a fax modem installed, set up fax and scan. It will try to connect to a fax machine to send a fax but wont connect. I get a message fax cant be sent because of a unreconized error. I have verizon phone line service plugged into the house lines.
Hsve i set up something wrong or won't it work with verizon?
