Networking Win 7 and XP Pro

    Windows 7 on Notebook

    Network - wired

Network and Sharing lists the following under "Network"

    Buffalo_NAS, can access
Computer "Home" (XP Pro), can access
    Computer "Acer-2" (this machine - Win 7)
Computer "Work" (XP Pro) this gets the following message when I try to access:-

    -------------------------------
    Network Error
    Windows cannot access \\WORK
You do not have permission to access \\WORK.
Contact your network administrator to request access

Windows "help and support" does not appear to be very helpfull :-(
    -------------------------------

Internet access is working, this over the network via a router.

I am NOT a networking expert of any sort and this has be baffled, can anyone suggest what might be the problem please?

The "Home" computer can access "Work" OK

    regards
    Bob

Welcome edenforge. Here's a link to another thread here in the forums. Follow the steps outlined by Barman58 and let us know how it turns out.

    Thanks for the reply.

Tried all that, but still cannot connect to \\WORK.
It seems to me that a username and password are being looked for, but I see no place to enter them

    Any suggestions welcome.......

    Cheers

    Hi Edenforge,

I assume you have shared at least one folder on the "work" machine?
You can't logon to just \\work
You need at least one shared folder on that machine.

In the explorer, map a network drive, and in the dialog, click on, use different credentials.

Now type the location \\work\name of shared folder, and press next,

You will get a dialog where you can type the username and password of the account you use on the "work" machine.

If you still get access denied, disable firewalls on both machines, to ensure they are not blocking the access.

99% of denied access is due to firewalls set to strictly.

    Especially Zonealarm gives problems.

    Good luck

Having the same user name and passwords on both machines is what I am still zeroing in on here. Passwords can not be blank. What's your version of w7?

Having similar accounts on both machine is not necessary.

You can logon with the user account of the target machine.
    (logon with different credentials dialog)

One other thing to try from the Windows 7 machine is to replace the Computer Name with it's IP address eg. \\192.168.1.24\sharename - this can help if there is a name resolution issue.

    Not very helpful.

I can imagine he doesn't want to re-setup his server, just because of a minor network issue on one of his clients, which is easily solved.
