Windows 7: Can only access Google / Yahoo websites

Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8.1 Pro,

It looks like you may have typed in a static IP which is not in the subnet of the router you are using? It looks like someone typed incorrect info into the IPv4 settings.

Hmmm, class B subnet is being used, must be a class B router which is rather strange.

You should have two DNS servers showing up there as well but I only see one. Try going to Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Is DHCP turned on in the routers settings because the IP you are showing isn't right, or maybe somebody typed in this incorrect IP.

It should be something like 172.17.1.199 not 172.17.148?? .199 you can change this by going into your IPv4 properties from the network adaptor.

My settings are to obtain an IP address automatically. I have not assigned anything static, either IP or DNS.

As for the wireless B, I have no control over what kind of signal I'm getting. I don'e know what the hotel I'm at is using. I wouldn't think they have such antiquated equipment or that they would restrict users to wireless B.

I've tried changing the DNS servers to Google but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I spoke to the tech support for the hotel wireless system early on about this problem. They had me set the DNS servers manually to 4.2.2.1 and an alternate to 4.2.2.2, but it didn't seem to solve the issue. I'll go back and retry these.

I still am going to try the ethernet connection to see if that has any different results.

Thanks, and let me know how I might solve the IP issue.

Well, after the Thanksgiving holiday break, I'm ready to tackle this thing again. I was able to try an ethernet connection during the holiday (both on my home network and at the hotel where I am staying otherwise) and it didn't have any effect. I'm not sure exactly when this happened, but now IE won't pull up Google sites, only Firefox will. And I can't get any other sites on Firefox but Google sites, but it doesn't always hold true. I can go to the Google search page and click on most of the links (images, shopping, etc.), but some of them I can't pull up. I can go to the "videos" page and see the thumbnails but when I click on the link, the page comes up but the video display is just B/W static like an old B/W TV. Sometimes the issue will clear up on its own after a few to several minutes, and other times I have to reboot. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I clear the DNS cache, do the IP reset, etc. as long as I do a full shutdown and restart. Sometimes when I hibernate it will reset everything and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I can disable and restart the wireless adapter and it will fix the problem and sometimes it won't. I thought for a while it might be the result of extended internet use, but I've had some instances lately where the problem flared up just a few minutes after startup. It just doesn't seem like there's any rhyme or reason to it!

By the way, I tried setting the DNS servers manually as suggested. It didn't help.

Any ideas?

Would the advanced TCP/IP settings under IP SETTINGS or DNS or WINS have any effect on this?

Windows 7 and Mac OSX

Hi,
I'm posting on this board because I am having the exact same problem except I"M ON A MAC! I deleted the entire hard drive and did a restore from my "time machine" backup and still have the same problem. I can go to google.com sites fine but cannot access any other sites. Just thought I would say so to provide reference.

I don't have a Mac, but I assume if you restore a Time-Machine Backup the error's cause will be restored as well.

Ltv, maybe that's something you could try as well. Backup your system, preferrably on an external drive, then repartition the HDD to make sure everything's gone and reinstall Windows.

After that only install drivers and nothing else and see if the connection works.

That way you can see if it's hardware/driver-related or something to do with special software or a virus.

Sorry I haven't been on the forum for the last few days. I wanted a break and decided to put up with rebooting every time for a while and see if any patterns developed. (I kinda hoped it would just go away.) Unfortunately, there are no patterns as far as I can tell.

I'm still suffering and am ready to tackle this again. Regarding BUR's remarks, I have run every kind of virus scan, malware scan, registry scan, etc. I can think of and nothing turns up. Does anyone know what differences there are between Google sites and other sites? Maybe that would give a clue as to why this is happening.

I'm not quite ready to do a reinstall of Windows yet. I'd like to find a solution (I like to know why things happen and fix them).

Thanks for any and all advice/help.

Well I finally figured out what was causing the problem. I'm not sure why it happened, but my anti-virus software was not allowing me to access any sites but Google. I read somewhere else that anti-virus software had caused a similar issue for someone else. I could disable the anti-virus software when the problem occurred, and then re-enable it and the then I'd be able to access any site . . . for a little while.

I contacted Avast! and requested their assistance. The couldn't tell me why it happened but suggested I uninstall the program and reinstall it. So far things have been working without issue. I'll post again if it reverts back to the same problem.

Just wanted anyone else who might be having this problem to know what the solution was.

OOPS ! ! ! The fix prescribed by Avast! didn't hold. It worked for most of one day, which is longer than I've gone between problems in the past. At least we know who the culprit is. I'll post more if Avast! can tell me what else to do.

Use their uninstall tool for this.

avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal

Did I mention that I literally and figuratively hate third part A/V software with a pink and purple passion.

I guess it's pretty obvious what the reason might be for this.

If you don't want problems like this then use Microsoft security essentials and scan with Malware bytes.
