Can only access Google / Yahoo websites

I recently bought a Windows 8 laptop, Lenovo. Same problem as is being discussed on this thread.
What helped was doing the following:

I have McAfee. Did a full scan, found a virus and removed it.

(McAfee needs internet connection to run, and could use the internet connection, but browser - IE - was behaving as discussed on this thread).

Then did the following (posted couple of years earlier on this forum).

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Both have to be done in admin mode and one has to restart the computer after each reset.

Now I could access web pages. Ran Auslogics (again as reported much earlier on this thread) to remove supposedly bad registry entries.

All ok for the time being. Lets see how it goes.

If it recurs, I am thinking of getting my Windows re-installed.

Did I mention that I literally and figuratively hate third part A/V software with a pink and purple passion.

I guess it's pretty obvious what the reason might be for this.

If you don't want problems like this then use Microsoft security essentials and scan with Malware bytes.

I only would like to share my experience which has been earned on the same problem I was facing. (I was only accessing some websites, such as google websites(youtube, gmail, and others). However, Microsoft websites, and yahoo are not opened at all.


I tried clearing the cach of DSN with the command below.

1- Open CMD as adminstrator.
2- type ipconfig /flushdns

Then, I restarted my router, then everything was OK.

I don't know if that clearing of the cach of DSN was solved the problem or not. But, after doing that, everything has been OK.

Been following the threads and tried all measures, but still had same problems. I could barely connect to AOL, could connect fine to GOOGLE and YAHOO, but couldn't connect to anything else.

In this case, my PC used Ethernet/LAN, and we use an AT&T modem (and a router to provide some more LAN connections) for several computers and network printers (both LAN and wireless).

I think that the right path is static IP assignment. However, you may have to call your internet provider to verify. Why? Your static IP assignments may work one day, and the next day will conflict with everyone else's in the world, once it attempts to connect to a website because someone else has the same static IP number. A quick phone call, I called AT&T and discussed, and they asked me how many devices I had in the office. From that, the representative assigned a range of available IPs that I could use within the office.

Subsequently, and similar to the previous threads discussed above, I went to NETWORKING AND SHARING CENTER, clicked on the left menu CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS, left-clicked on the available NETWORK CONNECTION icon, then clicked on PROPERTIES. From there, I highlighted the INTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 4 (TCP/IP4), then clicked on PROPERTIES. I changed the option of automatic IP address to "USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS" and put one of the allocated IP addresses in the first field. For my system, I used standard subsequent data such as SUBNET MASK 255.255.255.0, DEFAULT GATEWAY 192.168.1.254 (my modem router), and then I directed "USE THE FOLLOWING DNS SERVER ADDRESSES" and used the same router number 192.168.1.254

Been two days so far, and I have no problem now connecting to any website.

So had been searching for a solution to this for a whole day and found something that finally worked. Hopefully this helps someone else out. What I did was go to my LAN network adapter properties, uncheck both ipv4 and ipv6, then disable the network adapter. Then I re enabled the adapter, and checked ONLY ONE of either ipv4 or ipv6. For me, checking only ipv4 made my internet work again, although you may have to repeat and try the other protocol.d
